Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi quits AAP after Mann made Punjab chief

Meanwhile, AAP's Bholath legislator and party's chief whip in assembly Sukhpal Khaira has resigned from his post citing that he won't be able to handle multiple duties.

Gurpreet Singh Waraich was the former convenor of Punjab Unit of AAP.

Ghuggi had earlier questioned the "urgency" of appointing Mann as the new Punjab president and also questioned under "what pressure" the decision was taken.

"Opinion was sought from the state leaders on how to move forward after assembly elections in Punjab".

Ghuggi's decision to quit the party comes two days after the AAP named its MP Bhagwant Mann as its Punjab convener.

Speaking to reporters, Ghuggi said he resigned 'With a heavy heart'. He said he would reach out to those upset with decisions, including his appointment. Internal sources revealed that Bhagwant Mann's drinking problem had kept party's senior leadership from granting him the role, however, Mann has been asked to go through rehabilitation. "For Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiyat whatever needs to be done, I will do that, but this party which seems to have deviated from principles", Ghuggi said addressing media here. "Volunteers are the backbone of the party, but anti-party activities would not be tolerated", he said.

Accusing AAP of having closed its doors to "big leaders' who could have done well for the party, Waraich said that he tried to bring good leaders into the fold but his attempts were met with resistance. He said he had been defending the various indiscretions of Mann in public", a party source had told the Indian Express.

He said that it is shameful that the Congress government in Punjab has announced to give only Rs 13 lakh to the family of the martyr while the AAP government in Delhi gives Rs 1 crore to the kin of any soldier from Delhi who gets killed in the line of duty. "Also, a convenor I kept asking the party leaders in Delhi to show me the video on basis of which Sucha Singh Chottepur had been thrown out of the party. I had also said that his selection would have helped clear the doubts that the party works for a particular community", he said.
