India recall Shami for Champions Trophy campaign

Earlier, after the International Cricket Council (ICC) had overwhelmingly voted to drastically reduce the BCCI's share of revenue at its board meeting, the BCCI officials contemplated a pull out from the Champions Trophy in England and Wales.

Batsman Rohit Sharma returns to the squad after recovering from a thigh injury that he sustained during a Test series against England a year ago. Dhawan was the player of the tournament in the previous Champions Trophy at the same venue in 2013 and it is in that tournament, where he and Rohit established themselves as openers in the ODI arena.

"I was obviously happy to see my name in the India squad for the Champions Trophy but more than that I felt it was a reward for my performances in the shorter formats and in the ongoing IPL", Dhawan said.

New Zealand were in group A with host England, Australia and Bangladesh.

"Ajinkya Rahane would be the back-up opener", Prasad said.

With no surprises in the team, Prasad suggested the players had all picked themselves. Only Raina, who comes with a promise of flexibility and all-round capabilities, is the one in that list who has benefitted mostly from the IPL. The (IPL) franchise was magnanimous enough to listen to our request to rest him.

"We are completely impressed with Rishabh Pant".

"In the last eight to 10 years there has been a massive difference in the quality between India and Pakistan and that has been one of the major reasons why India have continued to dominate Pakistan (in ICC events)".

"According to me, he's still the best wicketkeeper in the world", said Prasad, a former India stumper. "That shows he is fit and not like others who are getting rehabilitated after surgery".

The southpaw made a sensational debut for India in the 2002 event in Kenya and featured in all events until 2006, before missing the 2009 and 2013 events.

He also expressed his views on a player being picked in an ODI side based on IPL performances.

Squad: Virat Kohli (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Manish Pandey. "He is an invaluable asset to the team and his inputs in crunch situations are vital".

"I have some good memories of the tournament and I had a great one the last time we played there".

Pakistan chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq thinks that if his team needs to go deep in the upcoming Champions Trophy in England, it needs to perform well vs India on June 4, in the opening match. We always treat him as a batsman but the phenomenal stuff he does behind the wickets, not many people appreciate that.
