Kids on DC field trip on overturned bus

A crash involving an overturned bus shut down I-95 near Cecil County Monday morning. Fire and emergency crews are on the scene. A Medivac is en route

Family members of I-95 Havre de Grace bus crash patients can call the school district at 215-400-5858 or the county offices in Maryland at 410-838-5800 for information on patient reunification and updates. All lanes were closed before Exit 89/MD155 near the location where the bus rolled onto its side. A teacher was taken to a trauma center in Baltimore, Superintendent William Hite said.

The crash took place Monday morning near mile marker 89 on the southbound travel lanes near Havre de Grace, fire officials said. In all, 26 children, two teachers, one parent who was chaperoning the trip and the bus driver were aboard the bus when it crashed. That child was taken to the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware. Patients have been taken to Upper Chesapeake and Harford Memorial hospitals.

Maryland State Police said from their preliminary investigation that the bus collided with a Honda Civic that was behind it just before crashing and overturning. The charter bus is from Phoenxville-based Werner coach.

WBAL-TV, a Baltimore NBC affiliate, reported that the children were from a Philadelphia city school.

Dr. Steven Fountain, an emergency physician at Harford Memorial Hospital, said he did not expect any of the patients to be held overnight. He said numerous patients suffered muscle strains and contusions. They say a auto was involved, and the driver is being interviewed. However, the police department suggested that a passenger vehicle was allegedly involved in the incident in some way.

The cause of the crash is still unknown. There's damage to the hill and guardrail on the right side of the highway. At one point a number of Philadelphia police officers could be seen nearby. At least two other buses and several cars were stopped near the overturned white bus with no apparent markings.
