Larissa Waters becomes first woman to breastfeed in Australia's federal parliament

Senator Waters later tweeted she was'so proud that my daughter Alia is the first baby to be breastfed in the federal parliament

According to Australian newspaper the Age, Greens co-deputy leader Larissa Waters breastfed her daughter Alia Joy on Tuesday when she returned to Parliament for the first time since giving birth to vote on a motion.

She became the first baby to be breastfed in federal parliament.

Ms Waters returned to work 10 weeks after giving birth to her second daughter and is making full use of the breastfeeding rules she helped to extend in the senate previous year, The Courier Mail reports.

Waters returned to work after 10 weeks of maternity leave on Tuesday with her daughter Alia Joy in her arms. "We need more #women parents in Parli".

While working moms were already allowed to breastfed in senate chambers, Waters fought for mothers - and fathers - to be able to care for infants while meeting on the senate floor.

The milestone moment comes after Waters introduced changes to parliament in 2016.

The House of Representatives has made similar changes.

She even sent out a celebratory tweet, calling for more women in the Australian parliament. "We need more women and parents in Parliament".

"If we want more young women in Parliament, we must make the rules more family friendly to allow new mothers and new fathers to balance their parliamentary and parental duties", she wrote in a statement published a year ago on the Green party's website.

'Women are going to continue to have babies and if they want to do their job and be at work and look after their baby.

The change followed controversy in 2015 surrounding former assistant treasurer Kelly O'Dwyer, who was asked whether she had considered expressing more milk to avoid missing her parliamentary duties.
