Miss District of Columbia Wins 2017 Miss USA

The second runner-up was Miss Minnesota Meridith Gould. It's the second consecutive year that a contestant from the nation's capital won the annual competition.

McCullough takes the crown from the reigning Miss USA, Miss D.C. Deshauna Barber.

The list has been narrowed down to three.

Kara McCullough, Miss District of Columbia, didn't hesitate during the interview segment of the pageant Sunday night.

McCullough, a 25-year-old scientist who works at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, tied in her own experience to her answer.

By the time Miss New Jersey answered the fifth and final question about whether social media is a positive or negative influence in our culture ("With great power comes great responsibility", she said), it was clear who had the most memorable answer of the night.

McCullough also raised some eyebrows when asked what she considers "feminism to be" and if she considers herself a feminist.

Before Miss D.C. stepped forward, the questions to the Top 5 were at typical degrees of difficulty: "How would you like the global community to view the United States?" New Jersey's Verg and the women representing Florida, North Dakota, Hawaii and CT said they have faced challenges and opportunities as immigrants. Next, they will face questions.

The contestants' remarks stand in stark contrast to the scandal that enveloped the pageant in 2015, when then-part owner and now U.S. President Donald Trump offended Hispanics when he made anti-immigrant remarks in announcing his bid for the White House. "I'm definitely going to say it's a privilege", she said.

When Kára walked onto the stage with her fellow contestants, it quickly became clear that she alone had chosen to wear her natural curls.

The broadcast included a performance from a Cirque du Soleil show - a Las Vegas staple - based on Michael Jackson songs.

Julianne Hough, Ashley Graham and Terrence J. hosted the show.

Grammy Award-winner Pitbull and CMA Award-winner Brett Eldredge will perform during the two-hour event.

Verg was one of five women who participated in the pageant who told The Associated Press they immigrated to the US with their families at a young age.

Fifty-one women will participate in the decades-old competition airing live at 8 p.m. EDT on Fox from Mandalay Bay Convention Center.
