Netanyahu against Abbas: "He didn't speak the truth"

President Donald Trump shakes hands with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas after their statements in the Roosevelt Room of the White House in Washington Wednesday

"The demand that Ramallah stop payments to the families of security prisoners is mad", Sha'ath told the broadcaster, adding that "such a requirement is created to destroy any chance for a peace process between Israel and the Palestinians".

Mr Trump also struck an optimistic note, saying he believes an Israeli-Palestinian deal can be reached.

He warned that Trump's vision of resolving the conflict might be close to the Israeli vision "which might drop the option of the two-state solution".

Among them, the right of return for Palestinians to lands now held by Israel and the establishment of a Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem and based on 1967 borders.

Trump renounced U.S. support for a Palestinian state and vowed to move the USA embassy to Jerusalem, breaking two tenets of USA policy held for decades.

During Netanyahu's White House visit in February, Trump both flattered and pressured him when the two fielded questions from journalists. Israel rejects a full return to 1967 borders as a threat to its security. The Netanyahu government, like those before it, have expanded settlements on war-won lands, despite US appeals to curb construction. "We have hopes for President Trump", he said. "They name their schools after mass murderers of Israelis and they pay terrorists", he said at the opening of a meeting with the Romanian prime minister in Jerusalem.

Ross, a fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, told reporters that "the gap between the parties has probably never been greater" but not impossible for Trump to overcome with a gradual trust-building approach.

Israel's government has a mixed and uncertain position on the two-state solution as it increases the controversial settlements in population in occupied territories while keeping the numbers the same.

The deleted tweet included a two-minute video compilation from Trump and Abbas' discussions on Wednesday, including positive statement about the peace process made by Trump himself and by his Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, in addition to a warm handshake between the two leaders.

Another contentious issue: Trump's campaign promise to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

"I heard President Abbas yesterday say that Palestinians teach their children peace". Trump stated that when he took office he was told by many that achieving peace would be an impossible task. This is something Israel is always ready for, Netanyahu said.

The tweet about Mahmoud Abbas that Donald Trump deleted after his meeting with the Palestinian leader at the White House. Three Republican senators urged a halt to such payments in a letter to Trump that reflected widespread opinion in Congress.

"Today, Abbas put himself in a confrontation with the Palestinian people", Barhoum said.

Abbas lavished Trump with praise for his leadership on the issue. "The Palestinians and Israelis must work together to reach an agreement that allows both peoples to live, worship and thrive and prosper in peace".

"It's absurd to request that we stop paying the families of prisoners", he said.

The hunger strike is led by imprisoned uprising leader Marwan Barghouti, widely seen as the most popular choice to succeed the 82-year-old Abbas one day.
