New Orleans takes down 3rd Confederate-era monument

City officials said in a statement Tuesday evening that the Beauregard monument, the third Confederate monument targeted for removal, would be removed over the next few hours. The statue came down just after 3 a.m.

Landrieu said the threats have continued unabated against those involved in the monument removal.

"Removing New Orleans's Confederate monuments from places of prominence is an acknowledgment that it is time to take stock of, and then move past, a painful part of our history", Landrieu wrote. She said many people have been working for decades to remove symbols of white supremacy from the city, so Tuesday night was an ordeal.

"Our overall mission is historic preservation, historic site management, promoting the culture of Louisiana and its history regardless of how unique and colorful that history might be", he said. "How the city can get away with moving a 102-year-old monument, against the advice of the Lt. Governor and Attorney General, and without first proving ownership, defies any sort of logic." .

"Today we take another step in defining our city not by our past but by our bright future", Landrieu said in a news release. Lee in one of the city's parks.

The Monumental Task Committee, in perhaps its most strongly-worded statement since the removal of the statues began, said the statue was of perhaps the most historically-significant Creole who ever lived. The city council approved of the plan to remove the monuments in 2015, but the process was stuck in legal limbo for more than a year as supporters fought to keep them up.

It's been nearly 18 months since the New Orleans City Council voted 6-1 to remove three monuments to Confederate leaders and one monument to a Reconstruction-era white supremacist revolt, but the formidable structures have only started coming down during the past few weeks.

On Wednesday, Nungesser spokesman Buddy Boe confirmed that "as it became a reality and it was evident the monuments were coming down", the lieutenant governor reached out to Landrieu to see if his department could put the Lee, Davis and Beauregard statues in state parks.

According to authorities, an officer saw the men allegedly painting the base of the monument with the words "Gen. Beauregard CSA". The demonstration attracted more than 700 people, including counter-protesters who carried Confederate flags.

In St. Louis, the mayor is reportedly considering the possibility of removing a 1914 monument commemorating Confederate youth but is being held up by the cost.

After the unveiling, a crowd of Confederate veterans circled the statue two or three times as strains of "America" and "Dixie" filled the air.
