Obama starts defining his new role in the age of Trump

Senator Graham makes a point as he questions U.S. Supreme Court nominee judge Gorsuch during the third day of Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing in Washington

The White House fired him in February after concluding he had not been truthful about those conversations.

Mondays's testimony by former acting Attorney General Sally Yates in front of a Senate subcommittee, did not impress the Commander-in-Chief. Former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who also testified, said he stood by past assertions that he had not seen evidence of such collusion but also declined to comment on classified matters.

Yates brought one of her top staffers with her on the afternoon of January 26 to meet with McGahn and one of his top aides inside a secure facility on the White House grounds so they could discuss the FBI's interview of Flynn.

Yates had learned that Flynn had been lying to the administration, including Vice President Mike Pence, about his December conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

The Donald Trump administration had been warned in November and in January of General Michael Flynn's contact with the Russian Ambassador. Russian Federation has repeatedly denied any meddling in the election and the Trump administration denies allegations of collusion with Russian Federation.

Yates' concern was that Russian Federation created a "compromise situation" where the national security adviser could be blackmailed.

Early on in the race for the Democratic nomination, Carter said he believed former secretary of state Hillary Clinton would get the nomination "because money dominates, and she has an inside track to the massive amounts that are going to pour into the Democratic Party side".

US intelligence agencies have been blunt in their assessment that the hacks of Democratic email accounts were meant to benefit Republican Trump and harm Clinton. And Yates was very clear about her intentions. "If nothing was done, certainly that would be concerning".

After those skeptical questions, Trump took no visible action against Flynn until a public outcry forced him to.

"Yes, it is (accurate), and it's also quite sensitive", Clapper said.

The warning, first reported by NBC News, came up during a discussion of White House personnel.

"Without that published report, and without the free press telling us a lot of what went on, Michael Flynn might still be sitting in the White House as national security adviser", said Blumenthal, referring to the original Washington Post report about Flynn's phone calls with Kislyak.

"I think that the process worked, frankly", Sean Spicer told reporters.

Obama pushed Flynn out in 2014 from his job as director of the military's Defense Intelligence Agency, or DIA.

But in a Senate hearing on Monday, the former acting attorney general produced just enough fresh intrigue to offer Democrats a new opening in the war of attrition they are waging against Donald Trump's presidency.

Hackers broke into the computer network of the Democratic National Committee during the 2016 campaign, which USA officials and cybersecurity experts have publicly tied to Russian intelligence services. They argue that congressional committees are too partisan to conduct credible probes.

The photo doesn't just highlight the lack of evidence of collusion between the Russians and Trump - it also takes a swing at "fake news" media.

"Director Clapper reiterated what everybody, including the fake media already knows - there is "no evidence" of collusion w/ Russian Federation and Trump", read Trump's tweet, which soon made its way up to his Twitter banner, superimposed over a seemingly unrelated photo of Congressional Republicans celebrating the recent House vote to repeal Obamacare.

The tweet mischaracterizing Clapper's words remains on the president's page.

After the hearing Monday, Trump tweeted: "The Russia-Trump collusion story is a total hoax, when will this taxpayer funded charade end?"

Clapper's statement wasn't particularly surprising, given that he left his post at the end of President Barack Obama's term and had admitted to being unaware of the FBI's investigation into Trump and Russian Federation until FBI Director James Comey announced it at a hearing in March, according to CNN.

Yates, a longtime federal prosecutor and Obama administration holdover, had been scheduled to appear weeks ago before the House intelligence committee, but that hearing was canceled. The headline from the Clapper and Yates testimony?
