Pentagon: IS in Afghanistan leader killed in April raid

USA and Afghan troops killed the leader of the Islamic State group's Afghanistan affiliate in an April raid, U.S. military officials have confirmed.

Hasib's regiment is also known as the Islamic State in the Khorasan (ISIS-K), which is a name for both Afghanistan and Pakistan that dates back to ancient times. It added that the Isis-K leader "was responsible for ordering the attack on the 400-bed hospital in Kabul, kidnapped girls and beheaded elders in front of their families".

Abdul Hasib was the target of an April 26 raid in Nangarhar Province, to the east of Kabul along the Pakistani border.

It is the second time in nine months that the US and Afghan forces have killed the leader of ISIS Khorasan Province, also known as ISIS Khorasan or ISIS-K.

In mid-April the US dropped the largest conventional bomb ever used in combat, colloquially dubbed the "mother of all bombs", against an ISIS-K tunnel complex.

Logari was among several high-ranking leaders of the Islamic State group's affiliate in Afghanistan who died in the raid carried out by Afghan Special Security Forces in partnership with US forces, the Pentagon said in a statement.

The United States role in the war in Afghanistan would significantly increase under proposals to be presented soon to President Trump, sources tell CBS News.

At least 31 militants affiliated with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) terrorist group's offshoot have been killed in eastern Nangarhar province of Afghanistan.

Western special forces have continued to provide support to Afghan troops despite the formal end of combat operations.

Top military commanders have said there is a need for additional troops in Afghanistan. A few thousand more are unlikely to make a difference.

But that is a far cry from the USA presence of more than 100,000 six years ago, and the Afghan military has struggled to fill the void amid an unrelenting Taliban insurgency. Some 2,300 Americans have been killed and more than 17,000 wounded in Afghan fighting.

But there's some worry about how well-positioned the US actually is in the country.

Afghanistan's government meanwhile confirmed Hasib's death on April 27th. The U.S. would then backfill those numbers to arrive at troop levels senior commanders want. "I heard stories of officers leaving the service, seeking counseling to resolve their cognitive dissonance".
