Police warn: If you're hit by cyberattack, don't pay the ransom

A chart made Sunday by Malware Tech shows the distribution of the 200,000-plus attacks by the'WannaCry ransomware

The attack has been found in 150 countries, affecting 200,000 computers, according to Europol, the European law enforcement agency. Capitalizing on spying tools believed to have been developed by the U.S. National Security Agency, hackers staged a cyberassault with a self-spreading malware that has infected tens of thousands of computers in dozens of countries.

Researchers who helped prevent the spread of the malware and cybersecurity firms worked around the clock during the weekend to monitor the situation and install a software patch to block the worm from infecting computers in corporations across the U.S., Europe and Asia.

There are several factors in play.

Who perpetrated this wave of attacks remains unknown.

At least one strain of the ransomware has proven especially vicious.

"All day long they analyse strains of computer viruses to see how they function" and find ways to stop them, said Godier.

For example, if one of your coworkers opens an infected PDF attached to an email, soon everyone in your office could be under attack.

But the timing of the attack meant it began after trading hours down-under. "Some of them are nearly certainly Internet-connected; some of them might be further back-end or otherwise not as vulnerable".

A cyberattack that has already taken over computers in 150 countries could spread further Monday, as people return for the start of a new work week and use computers that may not have been updated with a security patch.

Security firm Digital Shadows said on Sunday that transactions totalling US$32,000 had taken place through Bitcoin addresses used by the ransomware.

Grafi said his firm has been contacted by companies that are scrambling to avoid potential pitfalls.

The 5,500-strong Renault factory in Douai, northern France, one of the most important auto plants in the country, will not open on Monday due to the attack, sources told AFP. FedEx said it was "experiencing interference", the Associated Press reported.

A Nissan vehicle factory in the north-eastern city of Sunderland was also affected, a spokeswoman said.

Germany's national railway said Saturday that departure and arrival display screens at its train stations were affected, but there was no impact on actual train services.

Russian Central Bank: State media agency Tass reported the bank discovered malware bulk emails to banks but detected no compromise of resources.

"There is this stream of liability that flows from the ransomware attack", he said.

A Jakarta hospital said on Sunday that the cyber attack had infected 400 computers, disrupting the registration of patients and finding records.

"It could well be what we call a "watering hole" attack which is when you go to a trusted website, and a certain type of people go there, certain types of businesses go there, and they download this malicious software just by visiting".

In England, 48 National Health Service (NHS) trusts fell victim, as did 13 NHS bodies in Scotland. Many organizations without updated backups may decide that regaining access to critical files, such as customer data, and avoiding public embarrassment is worth the cost. "We will continue to work with affected (organizations) to confirm this", the agency said.

In the United Kingdom, hospitals were crippled by the cyberattack, which forced operations to be canceled and ambulances to be diverted.
