Pune: 21-year-old gets mom's womb in India's first uterus transplant

In what is the first transplant of its kind in India, a 43-year-old mother has donated her uterus to her 21-year-old daughter.

The institute is all set to carry out another womb transplant on Friday on a 24-year-old woman who suffers from Asherman's Syndrome and will similarly be receiving her mother's womb.

Doctors at the Galaxy Care Hospital in Pune, southwest India, performed the delicate, nine-hour procedure on Thursday, May 18. "The procedure was completed at 10 pm".

If the recipient conceives, the baby must be delivered through caesarean section and the recipient will also have to take immune suppressants life- long to prevent her body from rejecting the donor uterus. She is the youngest among her mother's six children, the rest of whom are now raising their own kids. Uterus transplant is not recommended for everyone. "All we had to do is to take out the diseased uterus and fit in the new one", Puntambekar said. Eggs were harvested two months ago, and will be implanted in the uterus in a year.

In September 2014, the first baby was born to a woman who got a transplanted uterus.

It is still unclear if doctors will be allowed to do more such transplants, as questions have been raised about how it is being monitored by regulatory authorities - in this case the health department of Maharashtra.

"The younger woman - the patient - is now under observation and will remain in Intensive Care Unit for some days", hospital staff said. Not everyone is convinced of the surgery's efficacy and, secondly, its success. The authorities received the final approval from the district level committee at Sassoon Hospital on Wednesday and carried out the first procedure on Thursday.

Since the majority of the retrieval part was done through minimally invasive keyhole surgery medically known as laparoscopic surgery, the donor did not even require blood transfusion. The uterus will be removed so that the patient does not have to keep taking immunosuppressant drugs to keep rejection at bay.
