Called WannaCry or WannaCrypt, the ransomware program is spread by taking advantage of a Windows vulnerability that Microsoft released a security patch for in March.

White House Homeland Security Advisor Tom Bossert said WannaCry has not infected the federal government's systems but the U.S.is working to identify the culprits and a foreign government may be involved. "All calls on this number will be handled by malware specialists, who will guide people on prevention and remediation".

President Donald Trump has ordered his homeland security adviser, Thomas P. Bossert, to determine what the government's response to these attacks will be, noted the Times.

Very few local individuals, businesses and/or organizations are vulnerable to the so-called "WannaCry" ransomware attack that hit much of the world over the weekend, but experts say it serves as a good reminder to always be vigilant about how computers, smartphones, and tablets are used.

Named WannaCry (also known as WannaCrypt), the ransomware has infected computers in hospitals, businesses, and homes.

The virus swept computers running on Microsoft Windows Operating System, especially those not now supported such as Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003.

As a result, numerous organizations such as the U.K.'s National Health Service have found themselves unable to access vital data because their files were encrypted by the cyberattack, which demanded ransom payments in the Bitcoin digital currency to unlock information. It began in Europe, affected computers in more than 150 countries, and was hitting locations in Japan and China as recent as Monday.

"One such incident pertains to 18 computers of Andhra Pradesh Police. and apart from that, there are five other cases. one of them in Kerala where some of the panchayat computers were affected", Sundararajan said.

Vu Ngoc Son, deputy head of the anti-malware department of Bkav Corporation, the largest internet security firm in Vietnam, said that the WannaCry ransomware's behaviour is "not new", but he believes that the use of this ransomware will not really ease up as "it can directly earn large profits for hackers".

They should immediately update their Windows operating system and back up their data.

The ransomware took advantage of a flaw in Microsoft's Windows operating system.

The ransomware attack struck British National Health Service organisations, along with computer networks of companies and municipalities in dozens of other countries.

United Lincolnshire's Hospitals Trust has cancelled all routine activity in the hospitals today while work carries on to restore its IT systems.
