Samsung Galaxy S8 Is Finally Getting Daydream Support

Standalone VR headsets that don't require a PC, a phone, or a whole mess of wires are going to make virtual reality so much more approachable. The fruits of this multi-year effort with Google now offer customers choice in Daydream headsets - from smartphone VR to standalone VR.

Positional tracking has always been a feature of high-end PC headsets like the Rift and Vive, but bringing the tech to mobile VR headsets in a practical way has been remained challenging. Google and Qualcomm collaborated to create a standalone Daydream HMD reference design, with all the goodies built into the headset itself. That means, by the time they launch, there should already be a gamut of applications already available.

VR just took a major step forward.

We haven't exactly heard much with regards to Daydream from Google's partners since the project was first announced past year, with the only high-profile devices being Google's own Pixel devices, the LG G6, Moto Z family and the ASUS ZenFone AR.

That's right since the launch of the S8 it had been speculated that the device lacked Daydream support to promote Samsung's own Gear VR solution, and that may have been true.

Those prior Daydream devices, which relied on typical smartphones, can only track the rotation of your head. With these devices added to the list of supported phones, there will be 11 different devices to choose from for your Daydream needs.

Google has partnered with Qualcomm to lock down standards for the new VR platform and said upcoming consumer headsets from Lenovo and HTC will be out later this year. We should find out tomorrow whether Google is ready to announce a big step in the VR space. You will need a compatible smartphone to use the headset. Both of those devices are tethered to powerful computers and work in conjunction with external sensors for tracking (Lighthouse and Constellation, respectively).
