SC teen dies after drinking too much caffeine, coroner rules

Coroner Gary Watts says 16 yr old Spring Hill High student Davis Cripe's death was caused by a ingesting large amounts of caffeine.

During the news conference, the elder Cripe urged parents to warn kids about energy drinks.

A SC coroner is warning about the dangers of excessive caffeine consumption after a 16-year-old student was pronounced dead from a caffeine overdose.

Among those at the news conference Monday was the teen's father, Sean Cripe. Healthline reports that the recommended daily caffeine limit should not exceed 400 mg for a healthy adult.

Cripe's father said he hopes his son's death will save other lives by showing the dangers of excessive caffeine consumption, according to the AP. Instead, it was an energy drink. "Our goal here today is to let people know, especially our young kids in school, that these drinks can be unsafe, and be very careful with how you use them, and how many you drink on a daily basis". "It's the, the amount and also the time frame in which these caffeinated beverages are consumed that can put you at risk, for anybody really, for your heart to start beating very, very rapidly and that could cause a sudden arrhythmia and in rare cases such as this can cause death".

Watts said Cripe's death was "from a totally legal substance" and determined Cripe died from a caffeine-induced cardiac event after drinking an energy beverage along with other caffeinated drinks.

Watts says parents need to know that while a soda or a cup of coffee is OK for teens, large amounts of caffeine can be deadly.

There's been a lot of talk over the years about how much caffeine is too much for the human body to handle, but one recent story might make you think twice about how much you consume, especially if you consider yourself a caffeine addict. Severe symptoms can include high blood pressure, seizures and coma, according to the National Capital Poison Center.
