Senate Intelligence Committee Wants to See Comey Memos

The Latest Ryan says no rush to judgment on Comey firing

They called on the White House "to provide records of interactions with former Director Comey, including any audio recordings".

"The requests follow news reports that Comey authored internal memos following meetings and conversations with President Trump in order to document what he perceived to be improper behavior by the President with respect to ongoing investigations at the FBI", said the committee. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, on Wednesday said the committee planned to invite Comey to testify during a public hearing next week.

The requests came in letters to acting Federal Bureau of Investigation director Andrew McCabe and White House Counsel Donald McGahn.

The FBI is investigating to determine whether Trump or his associates colluded with Russian Federation, although no evidence to support the allegation has surfaced.

The letters come on the heels of a New York Times report that Comey had written a memo detailing a conversation with the president in which Trump allegedly asked him to stop the inquiry into National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Wednesday said that the Justice Department has appointed Mueller as special counsel for its Russian Federation investigation.

President Trump fired Comey last week following which the administration officials provided multiple, conflicting accounts of the reasoning behind the dismissal.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Sen.

Grassley also told reporters that if there was interference, "then it seems to me Comey should have taken action on that interference".

She adds that "a special prosecutor is the first step, but it can not be the last".

Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, calls Mueller a "solid choice", and commends Deputy Attorney General Ron Rosenstein for putting "our country and justice system first". "Impeccable credentials. Should be widely accepted".

In the 1990s, Democrats insisted that independent counsel Kenneth Starr, who investigated former President Bill Clinton, overstepped his authority.

Democrats have clamored for a special prosecutor to investigate possible ties between Russian Federation and President Trump's 2016 campaign.
