Sheriff David Clarke says he's taken job at Department of Homeland Security

David Clarke, the cowboy hat-wearing black sheriff who gained fame for his support of Donald Trump's presidential campaign, said Wednesday that he will join the administration as an assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security.

"I will be leaving the position of sheriff to accept an appointment as assistant secretary in the Department of Homeland Security", Clarke said during an interview with WISN radio host Vicki McKenna.

He went on to say he'd talk to Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly to "figure out a strategy to create this better liaison between the Department of Homeland Security and our state and local partners".

DHS spokeswoman Jenny Burke said in a statement that "such senior positions are announced by the Department when made official by the Secretary".

"No such announcement with regard to the Office of Public Engagement has been made", a spokesperson for the DHS said to BuzzFeed News in regards to Clarke's remarks.

He said on the radio show that he would work with local agencies that can feel neglected or ignored by the federal government. But the death happened under his leadership, which his critics say was sufficient cause for Clarke to be fired.

Since last November's ouster of Arizona's Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Clarke has been the United States' most visible face of law enforcement's fascist bent.

Clarke is also facing scrutiny for the death of a mentally ill inmate who died of dehydration at the Milwaukee County Jail after being refused water for seven days. "In general the focus is on what you should be angry about, not what to like".

Clarke has apparently been angling for a job with the Trump administration for months. Last year, four people died in that jail.

It's unclear what position within the department Clarke will be taking. "The process for naming a replacement does not begin until a formal resignation letter is received", said Tom Evenson, Gov. Scott Walker's Office.

Whoever Walker picks will serve the remainder of Clarke's term, which runs through the end of 2018. Sheriff Clarke has, again and again, shown our community and the nation a disturbing pattern of weird, irresponsible and menacing behavior.

Many nationwide have bristled at his harsh rhetoric, though he has also faced criticism in his current job, particularly over deaths at the Milwaukee County Jail.

Clarke skyrocketed to fame as the black dude Fox News calls whenever it wants to denigrate a black person who is killed by the police.
