The cleanest and dirtiest railway stations in India

Vishakhapatnam emerged the victor in cleanliness index by securing first position in A-1 category station while Beas in Punjab topped the A category stations, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said here.

Secunderabad and Vizag railway stations under A1 category bagged top places in a survey on "Swachh Rail - Swachh Bharat" by the Ministry of Railways and a third-party audit agency.

The environment and housekeeping management directorate of the Railway board has commissioned the survey under the Swatch Rail Swatch Bharat mission past year. Darbhanga railway station in Bihar was the dirtiest among the busiest stations, reported by ht.

The survey was carried out for total 407 stations, out of which 75 are in the A-1 category or busiest stations and 332 are in the A category. Nevertheless, the ranking of the 16 zones of the Indian Railways across the country has hailed the East Coast Railway (ECoR) based at Bhubaneswar for its performance in maintaining cleanliness on the railway station and platforms falling under its jurisdiction. Suresh Prabhu talking about the stations said that, "We want all stations to be clean".

The railway station in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's constituency Varanasi is placed in the 14th position in A1 category stations (as their yearly revenue is more than ₹50 crore).

In the national capital, while Anand Vihar Terminal ranked 5th, New Delhi was ranked 39th among the major stations.

"The stations were ranked according to their cleanliness in parking, main entry area, main platform and waiting rooms".

The Beas railway station was put in 1st place, followed by Khammam, in the A category.

According to the ranking report, apart from the Bhubaneswar railway station, Puri railway station was ranked 37th among the 75 A1 category stations surveyed across the country.

The station notched up a score of 661.5 marks out of 1,000 while Visakhapatnam railway station secured 853.1 marks.

The categories are divided by the income that a station generate in an year. All suburban stations are in the C category, while all halts are in the F category.
