Trailer: First look at 'Star Trek: Discovery'

It will follow the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new life forms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself.

"Star Trek: Discovery" will debut later this year, with the first episode premiering on CBS and all subsequent episodes exclusively on CBS All Access.

The trailer begins on the same desert planet included in the tweet the Star Trek: Discovery team tweeted earlier today, but expands on just what's happening to the newest captain and first officer in the Star Trek universe.

Set 10 years before the events of the original "Star Trek" series, the premier season of "Discovery" is said to revolve around "an incident and an event in Star Trek history that's been talked about but never been explored". Everything, including the uniforms and the bridge, is shiny and slick.

2009's Star Trek has a lot of problems, but it does something pretty smart with how it creates a new timeline. When a mysterious object is sighted at the edge of Federation space, the Captains find themselves on the brink of war with the Klingons. But a few wooden performances and editing that leaps wildly from scene to obviously unrelated scene does the trailer no favors. My own nitpicks are deeply nerdy, but lawdy I'd love to see a Trek property attempt to go retro and keep aesthetic continuity with the original series.

Already the trailer has stirred some controversy, thanks to the rather different character design for the Klingon race.

For example, one alien Starfleet officer intones somberly: "My people were biologically determined for one objective alone: to sense the coming of death; I sense it coming now". Trailers are tough, especially when expectations are high. The image below showcases Captain Philippa Georgiou, played by Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh, and Lt. Michael Burnham, played by The Walking Dead's Sonequa Martin-Green.

The fact that the show, apart from the pilot episode, will be aired entirely on the CBS streaming service CBS All Access became more interesting this week.
