Trump son-in-law family apologizes for China name drop

NY [U.S.A], May 9: The family of the White House advisor Jared Kushner has apologised for mentioning his name while urging Chinese investors to sink millions into a New Jersey real estate project.

Nicole Kushner Meyer, Kushner's sister, mentioned her brother at a conference for wealthy Chinese investors as she tried to convince them to invest in the $821 million, two-tower project. Kushner Companies apologizes if that mention of her brother was in any way interpreted as an attempt to lure investors.

The sister of President Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner has been in China courting individual investors with a much-criticized federal visa program that provides a path toward obtaining US green cards.

Organisers barred journalists today from a publicly advertised event in Shanghai that offered Chinese investors the chance to get United States immigrant visas if they put money in a real estate project linked to the family of President Donald Trump's son-in-law. US lawmakers have been weighing proposed changes to the program, which would likely affect companies such as Kushner Cos. should it want to raise funds from such investors.

The program offers foreign nationals permanent residency - commonly known as a green card - in exchange for investments of at least half a million dollars in a USA business that must also create 10 American jobs. "They clearly imply that the Kushners are going to make sure you get your visa".

In a promotional text message seen by Reuters, Qiaowai made note of Meyer's relationship to Trump and called her the event's "heavyweight honoured guest".

She then said the Jersey City project, which the company is developing with real estate firm KABR group, "means a lot to me and my entire family", the New York Times reported. He insisted Kushner has complied with all ethics rules by disassociating himself from the company.

Judiciary Chairman Charles E. Grassley, R-Iowa, a proponent of EB-5 changes and co-sponsor of Feinstein's bill, says he expects the White House to stand by the proposed Obama regulations and does not believe Kushner's family ties would endanger their implementation. "But some who attended described an investor pitch similar to the one in Beijing, and Mr. Trump's political power was palpable at the Shanghai event even if his name went unsaid", they write.

Meanwhile, the Democrats criticized Meyer's sales presentation about the EB-5 investor visa program.

However, eyebrows have been raised as the Chinese investment sought by his family firm will be funnelled through the US EB-5 visa programme.

Before taking on his role in the White House, Jared Kushner sold his stake in Kushner Companies to a family trust. Investors were told to act now, as the visa progam could change.

Meyer noted that if investors put at least $500,000 into the Kushner-family backed project, they could qualify for an EB-5 visa.

Nearly all EB-5 investors are Chinese nationals, but the government keeps their names confidential. The New York Times says its reporters were kicked out of the Sunday investor presentation, along with The Post.

By obtaining an EB-5 visa.

"There is much harrumphing as the Kushner companies are found to be extolling the idea of investment in the United States economy as a way to gain a residence visa for America", writesForbes contributor Tim Worstall, a fellow at the Adam Smith Institute in London.
