2 injured when USAF Thunderbird jet flips over on landing

Emergency response personnel rushed to a runway at the Dayton International Airport in OH after a "mishap" involving a fighter jet practicing for an air show. Kenneth Cordova, an aircraft maintainer, suffered minor injuries and are in good condition according to Lt. Colonel Jason Heard, the Commander/Leader of the flight demonstration team.

Captain Erik Gonsalves, identified as the pilot, and TSgt.

The commander in charge of the Thunderbirds has said a safety board will determine the cause of the "mishap" that occurred at the end of an advance flight before the weekend's shows. Heard said that Cordova had no visible injuries and Gonsalves had some lacerations as well as some injuries to his leg.

It took the crash recovery team from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base more than 90 minutes to extract the pair from the damaged Fighting Falcon.

Following the incident, Thunderbirds cancelled their appearance on the show. Authorities say one of the pilots has been extricated from the plane. The Thunderbirds say more information will be released when available. Both were taken to a local hospital where they are receiving care and now in good condition.

America's Ambassadors in Blue will make a formal announcement on Saturday if they will perform on Sunday.

"All pilots, especially Air Force pilots are highly qualified and trained to make these types of decisions".

A military jet in the Air Force Thunderbird demonstration squadron apparently practicing for an upcoming OH air show has been involved in an accident, authorities said.
