'A Number of Casualties' After Incident in London, 1 Arrested: UK Police

Another eyewitness, who lives in a flat on the Seven Sisters Road, said the van seemed to have hit people who were coming out of the Finsbury Park mosque after prayers finished, the BBC reported.

Witnesses say an attacker laughed as he was arrested by police officers after a van "intentionally"' swerved into a crowd of pedestrians near London's Finsbury Park Mosque. While police have not released his identity, he was described in numerous accounts as being a white man. The Financial Times spoke to one witness who said the driver "looked happy" and was waving to onlookers as he was arrested.

The London Ambulance Service said it was responding to the incident.

"We call it a terrorist attack as we called it in Manchester, Westminster and London Bridge".

"Extra officers are on duty in the area to help reassure the local community", Police Commissioner Cressida Dick said.

The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) said on Monday that at least three to four persons were reportedly killed after a van struck a crowd of pedestrians in a midnight attack near a London mosque.

Chairman of the Finsbury Park Mosque, Mohammed Kozbar has tweeted about the incident. London Ambulance Service said on Twitter.

He said: "During the night, ordinary British citizens were set upon while they were going about their lives, completing their night worship".

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn wrote on Twitter: "I'm totally shocked at the incident at Finsbury Park tonight". Rahman said he and another man wrestled the suspect to the ground and held him down for 20 to 30 minutes before police arrived.

According to Russian media outlet RT, the incident took place near a mosque and the majority of the injured are Muslims who had just left the mosque following prayer time.

May said: "All my thoughts are with the victims, their families and the emergency services on the scene".

Reports said a helicopter could be heard circling over Finsbury Park and police have cordoned off the area.

British Prime Minister Theresa May says her thoughts are with all those injured after a van rammed into worshippers leaving a mosque.

The force also dismissed reports that the van driver produced a knife, saying: "At this stage there are no reports of any persons having suffered any knife injuries".

Britain's terrorist alert level is now at "severe" meaning an attack is highly likely.

Transportation officials said roads in the area were being closed.

"Muslim communities have been calling for increased action to tackle the growth in hate crime for many years and transformative action must now be taken to tackle not only this incident but the hugely worrying growth in Islamophobia".

The woman said her sister described it as "something from a horror movie, everyone running everywhere".
