Afghan Blast Aftermath Stokes Government Tensions

Over 150 people were killed and hundreds more were wounded in the deadly bombing that rocked capital Kabul last Wednesday.

In his speech, Mr. Ghani warned the Taliban that they would not succeed in bringing down the government, and said that the aim of the so-called Kabul Process was to ensure peace with support from neighbouring countries and the global community.

The Afghan leader told an global peace conference in the capital on Tuesday that the attack, which took place at a highly fortified area of the capital, targeted "the entire diplomatic community".

An Afghan official says explosions in Kabul have killed at least four people attending a funeral reportedly attended by government officials, including members of parliament.

The protestors marched from several sides of the city towards the district where the blast took place.

"Such attacks won't change India's unwavering stand on terror", Manpreet Vohra, India's Ambassador in Kabul, told The Hindu over the phone, confirming that no one had been injured by the rocket that fell just outside his residence. The Taliban have steadily expanded their reach since the US and global forces formally concluded their combat mission at the end of 2014.

As of late previous year, the Taliban contested or controlled about 40 per cent of the country, according to US government estimates, leading some observers to doubt the group would be willing to negotiate any time soon.

The Afghan TV channel Tolonews reported that the conference was opened by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani, who extended an olive branch to the Taliban but warned that time is running out for the radical militia.

Afghan soldier kills 2 U.S. soldiers
Army Rangers were killed Saturday during an insider attack by an Afghan National Security Forces soldier, U.S. officials now say. The Pentagon announced the casualties in a briefing statement that did not detail the incident, Xinhua reporetd.

"Taliban sponsored terrorism is creating a platform that is bringing terrorists and criminals from all over the region to Afghanistan", Ghani said, according to his prepared remarks.

The militants have said no talks are possible until all foreign troops leave.

Kabul has been on edge since the massive tanker bomb last Wednesday ripped through the city's highly-fortified diplomatic quarter, home to the presidential palace and a host of foreign embassies.

"The death toll could rise", he said.

"We are a nation of survivors".

Ghani also said that their "problem [and] challenge is that they can not figure out what is it that Pakistan wants".

The government has blamed the Taliban-allied Haqqani Network for the attack.
