Afghan soldier kills 2 U.S. soldiers

Three U.S. Army Rangers were killed Saturday during an insider attack by an Afghan National Security Forces soldier, U.S. officials now say.

During the joint operation of the Afghan National Defense and Security Force and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation forces, strikes resulted in the deaths and injuries to members of the Afghan Border Police.

Khogyani told AFP that an Afghan commando had opened fire on United States troops and was killed in return fire.

This intensified push against ISIS comes as the Taliban also steps up its activity targeting US and Afghan forces elsewhere in the country.

The U.S. military has not commented. The area has been cordoned off by USA troops. "This incident is under investigation". "Additional information will be released as appropriate", the statement said Saturday. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these American heroes".

As Jennifer Glasse reports for NPR's Newscast unit, Achin has been a major base for Islamic State militants. Although military officials say the group is far smaller than it was at its height in 2015, an estimated 600 to 800 militants located mainly in remote mountainous areas continue to pose an ample threat to USA and Afghan troops.

Such insider attacks have happened before in Afghanistan.

Three Americans were wounded in March when an Afghan soldier opened fire in southern Helmand province, in the first known insider attack on worldwide forces this year. The shooter was shot dead by other Afghan soldiers.

Earlier, provincial spokesman Attaullah Khogyani told foreign media agencies that an Afghan commando had opened fire on U.S. troops and was killed in return fire.

The Pentagon announced the casualties in a briefing statement that did not detail the incident, Xinhua reporetd. This is when at least one USA service member remains on watch while Afghan and US military forces are on patrol, dine together or are sleeping.
