Afghan soldier kills 2 US soldiers

March 19, 2017: An Afghan soldier opened fire on United States troops as they were training Afghan troops on a base in Kandahar.

They initially claimed that the plane was under attack and had to respond, but now are saying that the Afghan police were "patrolling too close to a Taliban base".

The motivations for such attacks are sometimes unclear, with some resulting from personal conflicts while others may be due to the Taliban's infiltrating the Afghan military.

The US soldiers killed or wounded are Army Rangers.

So-called "green-on-blue" insider attacks by Afghan soldiers on global service members were a major problem several years ago, but now occur less frequently after security measures were improved and the number of foreign troops in the country fell sharply. The President and I have been briefed, the details of this attack are forthcoming. But suffice it to say, when heroes fall, Americans grieve. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of these American heroes". ABC News also reports that there are now 8,400 American troops still in Afghanistan training Afghan forces and helping them in military operations. "We will release more information when appropriate", Douglas High, a spokesman for Operation Resolute Support, told The Washington Post.

In Kabul, meanwhile, the US military command said an unspecified number of Afghan police were killed and wounded in a "friendly fire" incident during a joint Afghan-US operation overnight Saturday. Saturday's attack came just hours after an errant U.S. air strike killed and wounded at least six Afghan policemen in southern Helmand province, in the latest "friendly fire" incident.

"We would like to express our deepest condolences to the families of the [Afghan Border Police] members affected by this unfortunate incident", a USA military spokesman said in a statement, according to the news service.

The #Pentagon's report also noted that an investigation of this incident was initiated. Afghan News Agency on Twitter, become a fan on Facebook. USA military officials estimate there are about 600 to 800 ISIS fighters in Afghanistan, mostly in Nangarhar, but also in the neighboring province of Kunar.

The group once controlled Afghanistan, and has recently regained its influence over Afghanistan.

The shooting occurred in the Achin district of Afghanistan's Nangahar province, according to a US defense official, an area where both Islamic State and Taliban insurgents are contesting territory.

"Three US soldiers were killed in eastern Afghanistan today".

In April, the U.S. Air Force dropped a bomb in the region nicknamed the "mother of all bombs".

The airstrike was part of an ongoing operation that was led by Afghan forces on the ground.

The latest counter-ISIS push began in March of this year.

The Pentagon has asked the White House to send thousands more troops to the war-torn country to break the deadlocked fight against the Taliban.
