Ainslie retires from America's Cup trials race with damage

The winners are set to progress to the challenger final and whoever wins that takes on defending champions Team USA for the America's Cup itself.

The Portsmouth-based team broke part of their wing during the first of their semi finals.

"In 30 years of racing, I've never seen anything like that", Sir Ben Ainslie, skipper of Britain's Land Rover BAR boat, said, as quoted by the BBC.

Team New Zealand start the recovery operation after their spectacular capsize in Bermuda.

The mayhem came a day after Ainslie was forced to retire from two races because of serious damage to his wing sail.

Burling said: "We will bounce back from this, as team this will really pull us together". Nail-biting. Winds in excess of 20 knots, crossing speeds four times that, boats quite literally being torn to shreds on Bermuda's normally tranquil Sound.

Ainslie's crew forfeited early in their first encounter with Peter Burling's in-form Kiwis and couldn't fix the problem before they needed to race again, retiring back to their boat shed where their shore team was expected to work through the night.

"We've all got a few bruises and cuts and bits and pieces, but nothing major".

In the other semifinal match, Dean Barker sailed SoftBank Team Japan past Sweden's Artemis Racing on the upwind third leg and won by 23 seconds.

Appearing to sense that the criticism was coming from New Zealand interests, Mr Murray spoke in detail about Team New Zealand's day in which they quickly swapped a damaged wing before Race 1 against BAR, then crashed out in the second.

All crew members were unharmed, although the same could not be said for the boat.

Team NZ's boat capsized during the race against BAR.

Ultimately, that mistake was to prove pivotal as Burling held his nerve in the final stages and crossed the finish line 24 seconds ahead of his rival, taking another step closer to the Louis Vuitton America's Cup Challenger Playoffs Final.
