AL GOP Representatives Safe After Baseball Practice Shooting

"I have long advocated - today is not what this is about - but that we have too many guns on the street", he said.

JOE BARTON: He shot at Steve Scalise, our second baseman.

He told Muir that he later found out that the suspect, identified by authorities later today as James Hodgkinson, 66, of Belleville, Illinois, had actually passed him at one point.

"It reminds everybody that we're pretty vulnerable and so I'm thinking about my own family and the Congressional families, who worry about those of us who serve", he added.

A top House Republican, Steve Scalise of Louisiana, was shot by a rifle-wielding gunman Wednesday at a congressional baseball practice just outside of Washington. A US Capitol Police officer who was also hurt in the gun attack was also receiving treatment at the facility, situated about three miles northeast of the White House.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky was at the batting cages during the shooting and told MSNBC, "There was a rapid succession of shots, you know five or 10 shots". His wounds were not believed to be life-threatening. She said the officer had gotten out of a parked auto, drawn a handgun and shouted something to the gunman, who then fired. And Rep. Andre Carson, a Democrat from IN and one of two Muslim-American members of Congress, told ABC News he "regularly" receives death threats.

Barton, the team manager, said he took cover behind a dugout when the shooting started. "Scalise's security detail and Capitol Hill police immediately began to return fire and Alexandria police also immediately came and began to return fire", he said. He said he grabbed Scalise's phone to call his wife.

"I think the first thing is you wonder if everyone is ok", he recalled.

Bernie Sanders, the former candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, said that the shooter apparently was a volunteer for his campaign past year.

Brooks said even after one of the officers was wounded, he limped toward the outfield in an attempt to help Scalise.

"The only reason why any of us walked out of this thing, by the grace of God, one of the folks here had a weapon to fire back and give us a moment to find cover", Republican Rep. Mike Bishop of MI told WWJ, referring to one of Scalise's security guards.

"He's loyal to the person he's assigned to protect", Brooks said of the officer. Democrats, practicing on a different field, bowed their heads in prayer for their Republican colleagues.
