Almost half of voters opposed to deal between Theresa May and DUP

Government did respond to fire safety recommendations UK minister says

Yesterday Adams held a meeting in 10 Downing Street with British Prime Minister Theresa May where he informed her she was in breach of the Good Friday Agreement over her attempts to form a Government with the DUP.

But speaking in Dublin after a meeting with the new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, the DUP leader Arlene Foster said it was down to Sinn Fein whether an agreement is reached.

Prompted by her poor election showing, particularly among pro-EU young people who fear losses of jobs and opportunity from Brexit, some of her most senior ministers and two former Conservative prime ministers have called for a rethink.

The Irish government statement said there was agreement on the importance of a functioning executive in the context of the Brexit negotiations due to start next week.

Monday will see the first round-table meeting involving the governments and local parties in negotiations to restore devolution.

On his talks in London with Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday, he said they had offered an "Irish solution to an English problem" as giving Northern Ireland special European Union status after Brexit to keep an open border on the island.

On Brexit, Ms Foster said her party wanted to see "a sensible Brexit and one that works for everybody".

Meanwhile, Chancellor Philip Hammond has been urged to publish the costs of any deals made with the DUP to prop up a Tory government.

And some fear the viability of Northern Ireland's fragile peace - which has held since 1998 after decades of inter-community violence known as The Troubles - could rest on the arrangement, with doubts around the United Kingdom government's neutrality.

Sinn Fein warned Theresa May today that her deal with the DUP puts her in violation of the Good Friday agreement, Gerry Adams has said.

Both Sinn Fein and the DUP have their roots in "The Troubles". "Any deal that undercuts in any way the process here of the Good Friday and other agreements is one that has to be opposed by progressives". "It's not certain, it's under stress, it's fragile".

Ireland's communists were engaged in a series of discussion forums with disillusioned Irish republicans, Mr McCartan revealed, arguing for "people's anti-imperialist politics" as the alternative to both Sinn Fein reformism and a return to militarism. "It is really for Sinn Fein to decide where they want those powers to lie".

DUP leader Arlene Foster said previous year that advocates of same-sex marriage were likely to send her "in the opposite direction", while Ian Paisley Jr, the son of DUP founder Ian Paisley, has called homosexuality "immoral, offensive and obnoxious".

Macron said the door was still open for Britain to remain in the European Union, though he added that it would be hard to walk back once negotiations start.
