American Airlines nixes plan to squeeze legroom on new 737 planes

American Airlines nixes plan to squeeze legroom on new 737 planes

The backlash was swift at a time when relations between USA airlines and their passengers have sunk to a new low.

American is sticking to its plan to fit 172 passengers on the new 737 MAX planes, as USA Today notes, but is simply ditching a row of the more spacious "Main Cabin Extra", which typically offer 36-37 inches of legroom, to recoup the space lost in the plans to scrap the three even-tighter rows.

PARIS/DUBLIN, June 13 Irish budget carrier Ryanair is in talks with Boeing about placing an order for its proposed new 737 MAX 10 jetliner, two people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

American Airlines will increase the space between seats on its new planes after feedback from customers and team members, according to a memo sent to employees Tuesday.

"It requires us to take into account customer experience, revenue, and other considerations", said American President Robert Isom. "We can be leaders in helping to turn around that perception, and that included reviewing decisions that have significant impact on the flying experience". "It's those last few inches that make the difference", he said. Additionally, the rest of economy would have seat pitch reduced to 30 inches in an effort to squeeze more seats on to the planes.

Shares of Spicejet gained 3 per cent in Thursday's trade on reports that it is likely to place an order for the Boeing 737 Max-10 planes at the aircraft's debut at the Paris Air Show later this month, thus becoming one of its launch customers globally.

United Kingdom budget airline easyJet EZY.L said in May it would take 30 Airbus A321neo jets with 235 seats from next summer, instead of 30 smaller A320neo planes, which it said would enable it to reduce costs per seat on affected trips by around 8 to 9 percent.

American Airlines has announced it will not go through with a plan that would reduce legroom to 29 inches from 31.
