American Brooks Koepka wins US Open

The former Florida State standout closed with 5-under 67 Sunday, realizing only after his par on the final hole that a birdie would have set yet another U.S. Open record in a week filled with them.

Hideki Matsuyama, meanwhile, ran off three birdies on five holes to start the back nine and was within two shots of the lead.

Tied with Koepka at 13 under, Harman missed his par putt at the par-4 12th to fall a shot off the lead.

Matsuyama, the No. 4 player in the world rankings, was the highest-ranked player standing after the three top players failed to make the cut for the first time since the rankings debuted in 1986.

It was a frustrating day for Justin Thomas, who had shot an Open-record 9-under 63 on Saturday.

American Brooks Koepka fired six birdies in the final round as he powered his way to his first major title in the US Open on Sunday.

While more players than usual broke par at a U.S. Open, numerous world's best golfers failed to make the halfway cut after Friday's second round. His only bogey on the back nine for the entire tournament was on 10.

Birdies were nowhere to be found on this hole, but sitting on a multi-shot advantage, Koepka maneuvered his way around it and posted another red number to effectively clinch the U.S. Open.

While he faded on the back nine, he carded a level par round of 72 to finish fourth. He finished at 16 under, good for his first major victory in the first Open at Erin Hills.

Koepka's winning total of 16-under equals the lowest score to par for a U.S. Open, matching Rory McIlroy's victory at Congressional in 2011 on a par-71 layout.

At 13-under on the 13th hole, Koepka was in the lead but still under plenty of pressure. It capped quite a journey for the 27-year-old Floridian.

Harman, playing in the final pairing immediately behind Koepka, then rolled in a 29-foot birdie putt on the third to join Koepka at the top of the leaderboard.

Koepka became the seventh first-time major victor in a row. More than worrying about the uncertainty of his career, he was trying to figure a way to close one of these big ones out. After he had, Matsuyama sat in the safety of the clubhouse waiting.

Koepka said he received a phone call from last year's U.S. open champion Dustin Johnson last night.

"It's awesome to get the calls and texts I got last night".

Sentiment and nostalgia will always find a place on the leaderboard, as 37-year-old Sergio Garcia showed by notching his first major win at the Masters in April, while 50-year-old Wisconsin-native Steve Stricker provided an emotional touchstone in an Erin Hills swan-song. "I wouldn't say I played bad, it's just a tough course". "You play in the weekend of a Major and you know you are never too far away from a good week, I am playing nicely and I have got the French Open, the Irish Open and the Open coming up in the next month and then obviously the PGA after that, so I've a big couple of months coming up and I feel like my game is in decent condition". Jamie Lovemark, Rickie Fowler and J.B. Holmes featured in a three-way tie at six under.

Not even the wind could stop the onslaught of low scores at Erin Hills.

But this week, among his peers, Koepka was certainly considered a viable contender with his ability to overpower even the biggest courses - and Erin Hills was the U.S. Open's longest layout ever at almost 7,800 yards. "I don't hit my driver 300 yards".

Koepka, who was the Sun Sentinel's 2006 boys golfer of the year in Palm Beach County, was mostly unknown to the casual golf watcher but his athletic build and solid form have made him a favorite of those looking for the next star of their fantasy golf league.

Koepka was one of the better young golfers on the PGA Tour without a major title on his resume.
