Arsenal swoop to land former Liverpool backroom supremo

Port Adelaide Fitness Guru Reportedly Leaves For EPL Giant

Arsene Wenger is believed to be a big fan and is said to have "hand-picked" Burgess for the role.

He was most recently recruited to the Power from another EPL giant, Liverpool, where he spent a little under two-and-a-half years as head of fitness and conditioning.

Burgess, who has been the high performance manager at AFL club Port Adelaide since 2012, is close to agreeing a deal with Arsenal with a announcement expected in the coming days, United Kingdom media reports.

Burgess, who is now working with Port Adelaide in Australia, is considered to be a leader in his field of expertise which focuses on fitness and conditioning.

Burgess will join up with the Gunners in July, but he will return to Australia later that month to oversee the Port Adelaide's performance programme at the end of the current campaign.

"We are appreciative of Arsenal's understanding that the integrity of our football program is the absolute priority for our club".

He had previously worked at Port Adelaide from 2004-2007, leaving the program after the 2007 AFL grand final to return to Premier League football.

As part of Burgess' move the two clubs will now pursue a partnership hoping "to grow sports science and professional development opportunities between Highbury and Alberton".

Anyone who has watched Aussie Rules Football will now how much fitness is required to get through each game, so if Burgess is one of the best in his role he could be an excellent addition to Arsenal's backroom staff, and hopefully the first of many improvements ahead of the new season.

AFL.com.au has contacted Port Adelaide for comment.
