At Least 65 People Missing in London Fire

The Queen mets firefighters at a rest centre near the tower yesterday

Facing fierce criticism over its response to London high-rise inferno, the British government has sent its staff to assist local council authorities in rehabilitation of victims of the deadly blaze that claimed at least 58 lives and rendered hundreds homeless.

Police Commander Stuart Cundy said Saturday it will take weeks or longer to recover and identify all the dead in the public housing block that was devastated by a fire early Wednesday.

At least 30 people were killed in Wednesday's inferno, which left Grenfell Tower a charred hulk. "So that 58 would include that 30", the spokesman said Saturday.

Prime Minister Theresa May has been criticised for her muted response to the fire and had to be rushed away from a meeting with residents on Friday under heavy police guard as protesters shouted "Shame on you".

In a television interview Friday, she sidestepped questions over whether she had misread the public mood.

Speaking as he left the church with his wife Saadiya, Khan said: "I've spent time with the local community, not just the Christian congregation, but members of all faiths here at the church, grieving, sharing their stories".

"There is money pouring in from all these incredible volunteers - we can't get access to the money".

"If there are any safety issues that we and experts that we will be using identify, we will share that immediately".

The cause of Wednesday's blaze is still under investigation, but anger has mounted in the community amid reports that exterior paneling used in an extensive renovation completed past year may have been banned by United Kingdom rules.

Activists and local residents held demonstrations at the borough's town hall, London's Oxford Street, the United Kingdom home office, the BBC, and the prime minister's official residence at Number 10 Downing Street to vent their frustrations.

The police are appealing to anyone with pictures or videos of the blaze to hand them in, as they may help establish not only where and how the fire started, but also how it spread.

May who has promised £5 million ($6.4 million, 5.7 million euros) for emergency supplies, food and clothing, has also announced a judge-led inquiry into the disaster.

Queen Elizabeth II and her grandson Prince William visited a community centre where some of the survivors are being housed, as anger grows among local residents about allegations that fire safety concerns were ignored for years.

"We're all desperately sad, we're all angry, but of course none of us as angry as those who were directly affected".

"The residents of Grenfell Tower, families who have lost loved ones, and the emergency services who have been working so hard to help them have been through some of the most harrowing and traumatic experiences imaginable", Mrs May said.

Two boys inspect pictures of the missing.

"People raised these concerns, people were expressing issues regarding the safety and unsafe living conditions", says Lancaster West Residents Association chairwoman Olesea Matcovschi.

Protesters stand in the lobby of Kensington town hall in west London, the headquarters of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, demanding answers over the Grenfell Tower fire, in London, Friday June 16, 2017.
