At least six dead in Mali hotel attack

Mali's security minister says at least two people are dead after suspected jihadists attacked a popular resort on the outskirts of the capital.

The Malian troops and soldiers from France's Barkhane counter-terrorism force were called to Le Campement in Dougourakoro, a resort popular with westerners east of Bamako.

"I heard gunfire coming from the camp and I saw people running out of the site", Diarra said.

The Malian Security Ministry said that attackers were "armed individuals, certainly terrorists", and although no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, it appears to be quite similar to other attacks carried out by jihadist groups in Mali and North Africa, mainly targeting areas frequented by Westerners.

The security forces of Mali alongside French special troops and the United Nations stabilization mission, dubbed MINUSMA, are engaged in a counterterrorism operation.

Moussa Ag Infahi, director of the national police, told The Associated Press that three of the assailants had been killed while a fourth escaped.

The ministry said late Sunday that one victim was a dual French-Gabonese citizen.

Banned building materials helped flames to spread quickly in London fire
London's Metropolitan Police confirmed Friday they had launched a criminal investigation into the incident. A firefighter stands outside of the Grenfell Tower after fire engulfed the 24-storey building, in London .

One of the extremists was wounded but managed to escape, according to the statement.

Baba Cisse said by telephone. The identity of the other person killed was not immediately known.

"Sunday's violence came about a week after the State Department warned US citizens of "possible future attacks" on locations in Bamako that Westerners frequent".

An official in Macron's office said the president has been informed about the attack and he and his teams are following the evolving events.

In January 2016, 30 people were killed, including many foreigners, in an attack on a top Burkina Faso hotel and a nearby restaurant in the capital Ouagadougou.

That attack was jointly claimed by both the regional al-Qaida affiliate and a group known as Al Mourabitoun, which was founded by Moktar Belmoktar after he fell out with al-Qaida leaders.

The gunmen shouted "Allahu akbar" as they opened fire on tables of people who were gathered for breakfast at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Bamako, a witness said. Associated Press writer Angela Charlton in Paris contributed.
