At US Senate hearing, Jeff Sessions denies meeting with Russian officials

This week, he asked her to simply let him answer.

He said while Trump has not invoked executive privilege, he was seeking to protect "the right of the president to assert it if he chooses".

Sessions recused himself from the Russia probe in March after it was revealed he twice met with the Russian ambassador during the campaign but failed to say so at his confirmation hearing.

Sessions refused to say whether he and Trump discussed FBI Director James Comey's handling of an investigation into possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation during the election campaign before the president fired Comey on May 9. "There are none", said Sessions. "What are they?" asked Democratic Senator Ron Wyden.

The details of a February 14 Oval Office meeting, where Sessions and other top aides left the room and Trump talked to Comey alone. Kamala Harris of California was cut off again while questioning Attorney General Jeff Sessions. Despite voters in the Politico poll indicating by a two-to-one margin that Comey's statements have hurt the president, Trump has maintained that he feels vindicated by the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director's testimony.

The memo reportedly recommended Comey's dismissal for having mishandled the Department of Justice investigation into former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's emails, according to VICE. "I am following the historic policies of the Department of Justice".

"Do you concur with the president [that] he was going to fire Comey regardless of [Rosenstein's] recommendation because the problem was the Russian investigation?" asked Sen. Indeed, this is what both the Senate investigation and the special counsel investigation, headed by Robert Mueller, are supposed to suss out.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, June 13, 2017, before a Senate Appropriations subcommittee hearing on the Justice Department's fiscal 2018 budget. The FBI is part of the Justice Department that Sessions heads. Sessions added that, "to suggest that a recusal from a single specific investigation" would render him unable to manage the leadership of the FBI would be "absurd".

Things got heated when one democrat asked if there are problems with sessions recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation.

If Comey had information that Sessions would need to recuse himself, he said, that would have been "double reason" to talk to Boente. "There are none", the Attorney-General responded. "I think your silence speaks volumes", said Sen.

Some have said Sessions recusal should have prohibited him from firing former FBI Director James Comey.

Sessions was involved in the Trump campaign since early 2016. This was after a February meeting in which Comey said Trump told Sessions and others to leave the room before asking him to drop a probe into National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation. Or was it because of the Russian Federation probe, as Trump said later on television?

The White House, which was slow to say whether President Trump has confidence in Sessions, finally confirmed at the end of last week that the president does have confidence in the country's top law enforcement officer.

Cotton began by asking frustratedly what the point of the Senate committee was in the first place. "Further, I have no knowledge of any such conversations by anyone connected to the Trump campaign". One possible encounter - at a reception before a Trump speech at Washington's Mayflower Hotel in April, 2016 - was so inconsequential, he said, he could not remember speaking with Mr. Kislyak there.

"I am not stonewalling", Sessions said in response to an accusation he was covering up conversations with the president.
