Banned Building Materials Suspected in London Fire: UK

He said the government is carrying out an "urgent inspection" of other tower blocks in Britain to assess safety.

The British government on Sunday vowed to act on any recommendations from an inquest into the a fire that consumed a 24-story high-rise tower in the west of London and killed at least 58 people.

Later on Sunday, former United Kingdom chancellor Philip Hammond said the cladding material used on the building was banned on British high-rises.

Reports suggest that a renovation project on Grenfell Tower previous year intentionally did not include safety devices such as sprinklers and doors created to keep the fire from spreading.

Greg Hands told Sky News that "my understanding is that the cladding that was reported was not in accordance with United Kingdom building regulations".

Families who have lost their homes must be supported, he said, grieving people must be helped and lessons must be learned following the tragedy, including ensuring it is not "so hard" for those who need help to find it.

Aluminum cladding with insulation sandwiched between two panels has been blamed for helping to spread flames in major fires in many parts of the world, including blazes in the Middle East, Europe, Asia and the United States.

Tottenham MP David Lammy called on Mrs May and the Metropolitan Police to immediately seize all relevant Grenfell Tower documents amid concerns among residents of a cover-up.

In this photo released by the Metropolitan Police on Sunday, June 18, 2017, burnt out lifts on an undisclosed floor, in the Grenfell Tower after fire engulfed the 24-storey building, in London.

"In our meeting at Downing Street, we explained to the Prime Minister the anger of all residents towards the management of the estate over a long period of time, paving the way to this tragedy".

He complained bitterly that a friend - the young artist Khadija Saye - was still alive three hours after the fire started but was unable to get out of her apartment to safety.

Releasing a tranche of footage showing the aftermath of the blaze, Mr Cundy said: "Today, police teams continue their support to families, and make enquiries to cross check the number of those missing". He has not provided details about the inquiry.

Attending a church service near the building to remember victims, London mayor Sadiq Khan admitted the local community was frustrated at the official response to the disaster.

Eleanor Kelly, chief executive of Southwark Council, on behalf of the newly established Grenfell Fire Response Team, said: "We want to make clear that whilst the emergency and local community response was nothing short of heroic, we know that the initial response was simply not good enough on the ground".

A minute's silence will be held at 11:00am (1000 GMT) across Britain on Monday to remember the victims. She also says she will receive daily reports from the stricken neighborhood.

Family liaison officers have been deployed with 52 families, including those with critically ill relatives as well as those whose family members have died.

The Home Office said it is "making arrangements" for the family of 23-year-old Syrian refugee Mohammad Alhajali - the first victim to be formally identified - to travel to the United Kingdom for his funeral.

Police said Saturday that 30 people had been confirmed dead since the fire, while another 28 remain missing and are presumed dead.

Police are using the INTERPOL Disaster Victim Identification Standards to identify the dead, relying on dental records, fingerprints and DNA when possible, as well as features like tattoos or scars.
