Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind NDA's Presidential nominee: Amit Shah

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Sushma Swaraj, Nitin Gadkari and M Venkaiah Naidu and other senior party leaders deliberated on the names for the top constitutional post.

BJP's president Amit Shah has announced Bihar Governor Ram Nath Kovind as its nominee for India's upcoming presidential candidate on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives at the BJP party Head Quarters.

"Shri Ram Nath Kovind, a farmer's son, comes from a humble background". Advocate by profession, Ram Nath Kovind was elected to Rajya Sabha from the state of Uttar Pradesh during the two terms of 1994-2000 and 2000-2006.

During his parliamentary tenure, Mr. Kovind emphasised on development of basic infrastructure for education in rural areas and helped in the construction of school buildings in Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand under MPLAD (Member of Parliament Local Area Development) Scheme. He was Central Government's advocate in Delhi high court from the year 1977 to 1979 and Central Government Standing Counsel in Supreme Court from 1980 to 1993. He was enrolled as an Advocate in 1971 with the Bar Council of Delhi.

In the midst of an upsurge in caste-related unrest, the BJP was only paying "lip service" to underprivileged groups by appointing a Dalit as its presidential candidate, according to Paul Divakar, the general secretary of the National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights.
