Black mother slain by Seattle police battled mental health decline

A 30-year-old woman is dead after suffering a gunshot wound to the chest and abdomen at an apartment building near Magnuson Park in Seattle Sunday morning.

There were several children inside the apartment during Sunday's incident, though they were uninjured, police said. The sister also told the Times that the shooting victim has a history of mental health problems.

According to the Times, initial reports indicated that a man shot his wife, triggering a police call, though it was not immediately clear where that report came from.

Two patrol officers dispatched just before 10 a.m. Sunday to investigate a reported burglary at Brettler Family Place, an apartment complex for people transitioning out of homelessness, Detective Mark Jamieson said.

The Seattle Police reported that detectives from their Force Investigation Team (FIT) will be investigating the use of force by police officers and that both officers who were involved in the incident will be placed on paid administration leave, in accordance with department policy.

One family member noted to the Times that Lyles was physically very small and that police could have instead used a taser or physical force to mitigate any potential threat from her. "I could have taken her down".

"At some point the 30-year-old female was armed with a knife", Jamieson told reporters. Both officers fired and struck the woman.

With the bat in hand, India found themselves under early pressure after losing both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for just 6 runs. Pakistan thrashed arch-rivals India by 180 runs to win the global cricket tournament at The Oval in London , U.K. on Sunday.

"Why couldn't they have Tased her?" "They could have taken her down".

How is a cop surprised that a woman reporting a burglary, at home alone with her children would answer the door with a weapon or some form of protection?

King County jail records show that Lyles was arrested on June 5 on charges of harassment, obstruction of a public official and harassment of a law enforcement officer. Friends and family wondered aloud how police could shoot and kill a mother in front of her children.

Police say three children inside the apartment at the time were unharmed. They have been taken into protective custody.

The Seattle Police Department has been implementing court-ordered reforms since 2012 to address what a U.S. Justice Department investigation found to be a pattern of excessive force by officers that often arose during encounters with the mentally ill or drug-addled suspects.

Jamieson says detectives are investigating.
