Bodies of 7 US Sailors Found in Damaged Part of USS Fitzgerald

The search for seven missing U.S. Navy sailors was called off Sunday after several bodies were recovered from the flooded compartments of the destroyer.

The collision between the 10,000-ton USS Fitzgerald and the 29,000-ton merchant vessel ACX Crystal occurred early Saturday local time almost 60 miles from the coast of Japan.

"This was a severe emergency", Aucoin said Sunday at the Yokosuka naval base, home of the U.S. Navy's Seventh Fleet.

Japan's chartering ship company, Nippon Yusen KK, which commissioned the container ship that struck the USS Fitzgerald, said in a declaration on Saturday it would fully cooperate with the United Stated Coast Guard and the investigation of the collision.

The destroyer sustained damage to it's starboard side above and beyond the water line.

Despite efforts to ease the intake of water, the statement said it was "uncertain how long it will take to gain access to the spaces once the ship is pier side in Yokosuka".

It is reported that following the collision many in the crew kept diving into flooded parts of the ship attempting to rescue fellow sailors, worked to keep the destroyer afloat or manned the guns thinking the collision may have been an attack. The 7th Fleet said the sailors were in stable condition and were are being treated for lacerations and wound at the Naval Hospital Yokosuka.

"Our government expresses its heartfelt solidarity with the United States at this hard time, and will spare no effort in supplying any and all assistance", Japan's prime minister Shinzo Abe said on Sunday.

The skipper, who was injured in the head and airlifted to shore, was also in his room resting, Aucoin said, adding that he was lucky to have survived.

Multiple U.S. and Japanese investigations are under way on how a ship as large as the container could ram into the smaller warship in clear weather.

The damage to the destroyer suggests that the container ship, the ACX Crystal, might have slammed into it at a high speed. Once the ship arrived in Yokosuka, divers began inspecting the damage and developing a plan for repairs and inspection of the spaces.

"It was traumatic", Aucoin said.

"Thoughts and prayers with the sailors of USS Fitzgerald and their families", President Donald Trump said on Twitter.

The USS Fitzgerald's captain, Cmdr.

The Fitzgerald's commanding officer, Commander Bryce Benson, and two other crew members were reportedly injured in the crash as well.

Navy chief Adm. John Richardson says Navy, Japanese maritime defense vessels and the Japanese coast guard are working to stabilize the badly damaged ship.
