Boeing sees strong interest in potential new 737 model

Paris: Boeing Co. will offer its first new jet in nearly four years, with the stretched Max 10 upgrade of the 50-year-old 737 countering Airbus SE's headstart at the largest end of the single-aisle aircraft market.

Airbus and General Electric's aircraft leasing arm, GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS), announced the firm order Monday.

The U.S. company may announce as many as six separate deals for the Max 10, with United Airlines, Indonesia's Lion Mentari Airlines PT and SpiceJet Ltd. of India all said to be looking as placing contracts, according to people familiar with negotiations.

The last event in 2015 brought orders for 421 planes worth $57 billion (51 billion euros) for Airbus and orders for 331 planes worth $50 billion (44.6 billion euros) for Boeing. "The Max 10 is going to add" to a portfolio that boasts a production backlog of seven years.

The B737 Max 10 will be 66 inches longer than the B737 Max 9 variant, and will be capable of carrying up to 230 passengers, with the aim of competing with Airbus' A321 neo. Other alterations to earlier versions include a variable exit limit rating mid-exit door, a lighter, flat aft pressure bulkhead and a modified wing for low-speed drag reduction.

Airbus's biggest-capacity member of the mid-range family, the brand new A321neo, is able to fit in 236 seats in an all-economy class version.

The A320neo range of jets, created to use less fuel than the original and widely-used A320s, have proven popular and are competing with Boeing's 737 Max series. Boeing said. The MAX 10 will have a range of 3,215nm with one auxiliary fuel tank.

BOC has committed to more than 300 Boeing aircraft since its establishment.

"Our customers told us to build it bigger", said Kevin McAllister, Boeing Commercial Airplane chief executive Kevin McAllister on Monday.

The aircraft marker's first new jet in nearly four years is a stretched upgrade of the 50-year-old Boeing 737 single-aisle workhorse flown domestically by both Qantas and Virgin Australia. Test flights have been completed and Boeing is now talking to customers about ordering the Max 10.

China's CDB Aviation Lease Finance signed a memorandum of understanding for 42 737 MAX 8s, 10 737 MAX 10s and eight 787-9 Dreamliners. The airplanes, including 737 MAX 10 and 737 MAX 8 airplanes, are valued at approximately $2.5 billion at current list prices.
