Brexit : Britain eyes deal 'like no other in history'

British Prime Minister Theresa May

Police said one man had been pronounced dead and 10 people were injured, in what Britain's largest Muslim organization said was a deliberate act of Islamophobia.

Brexit Secretary David Davis will officially sit down with his European Union counterpart Michel Barnier later this morning.

Such is the collapse of May's authority that her entire Brexit strategy is being picked apart in public by her ministers, her lawmakers and her allies on the eve of formal negotiations which begin in Brussels on Monday at 0900 GMT.

Chancellor Philip Hammond warned yesterday the failure to strike a deal would be a "bad outcome" for Britain - but insisted that was still better than a bad deal imposed by Brussels.

Mr Johnson will also encourage the bloc's other foreign ministers to join forces to track foreign fighters returning from Iraq and Syria.

"It was a mistake for the campaign not to focus more on an area where we have a great story to tell - our record on the economy", he said.

European Union and British chief Brexit negotiators began talks on Britain leaving the EU on Monday, stressing the need to quickly tackle uncertainties and underlining their constructive attitude to reach a deal that is good for all.

'That is a resolution of a British problem that has been dithering on for decades'.

Still, Johnson called on people to look at the more distant future.

A spokesman for the Department for Exiting the European said: "We believe that the withdrawal process can not be concluded without the future relationship also being taken into account".

Mr Johnson is in Luxembourg today taking part in a meeting of European Union foreign affairs ministers about terrorism. We could do this by joining the European Economic Area (EEA).

Prime Minister Theresa May had taken a hard-line approach on leaving the European Union but a disastrous election result for her Conservative party on June 8 has left London's policy in disarray and her own political future uncertain.

20-21 October: EU summit, at which leaders have to decide whether enough progress has been made to move on to phase two of talks, covering the UK's future trade relationship with the bloc.

Davis is to say on Monday that Britain wants "both sides to emerge strong and prosperous", according to a statement by the UK's department for exiting the EU.

"The UK will remain a committed partner and ally of our friends across the continent", Davis said.

"While there is a long road ahead, our destination is clear - a deep and special partnership between the United Kingdom and the EU". "If there is going to be a deal, it makes it more likely to be softer than before the election, but on the other hand the probability of no deal at all has increased".

Speaking in Luxembourg Friday before a meeting of European Union finance ministers, Hammond said, according to Reuters, "My clear view, and I believe the view of the majority of people in Britain, is that we should prioritize protecting jobs, protecting economic growth, protecting prosperity as we enter those negotiations and take them forward". In a tweet yesterday afternoon, he said: "Back this weekend in my countryside, Savoie, to draw the strength and energy that the long hike requires".

A Whitehall source said the DexEU team was ready.
