Britain eyes Brexit deal 'like no other in history'

"Now, the hard work begins", Davis said, adding he wanted a deal that worked for both sides.

"We want both sides to emerge strong and prosperous, capable of projecting our shared European values, leading in the world, and demonstrating our resolve to protect the security of our citizens".

Days after a suggestion from French President Emmanuel Macron that Britain could still choose to remain, Davis said there would be no backtracking from Prime Minister Theresa May's plan to deliver on Brexit, for which Britons voted in a referendum nearly a year ago. And while there is a long road ahead, our destination is clear - a deep and special partnership between the United Kingdom and the EU. The negotiations have been called the most complex in Britain's history as it unravels 44 years of membership and its threat to walk out with no deal in place has anxious European capitals. Mr Case was Principle Private Secretary to the Prime Minister before talking up this role.

The possibility of any trade deal is not expected to be up for discussion just yet. She will not take part in day-to-day negotiations but is expected to set Britain's approach and have the final say on any compromises or concessions. However, the shock result and loss of a Conservative majority has reopened the debate over what sort of Brexit Britain wants.

All the confident predictions by senior Tories that Britain would leave the European Union on its own terms, and insist if necessary on a so-called hard Brexit, with calamitous consequences on both sides of the Irish border, have swiftly evaporated.

When does phase two of talks begin?

The first issue at the Brussels talks will be the status of millions of European Union citizens living in the United Kingdom and British residents of the other 27 countries, including their right to stay, to work, and to access medical care.

The EU wants to secure the rights of more than three million Europeans living in Britain - and over one million Britons living on the continent.

The Queen's Speech sets out details of extensive UK Government legislation required to put Brexit into effect, expected to include a Great Repeal Bill bringing European Union laws and regulations onto the British statute book, as well as bills on issues including immigration and customs.

Brexit talks in Brussels on Monday will focus on the status of expats, the UK's "divorce bill" and the Northern Ireland border, rather than on future trade relations with the European Union, it has been confirmed. International Trade Minister Liam Fox will travel to Washington on June 19 to explore new trade ties - although no formal negotiations are possible until Britain has actually left the bloc.

Dr Fox is meeting a congressional delegation on Capitol Hill in an attempt to pave the way for a UK/US Free Trade agreement.
