Britain left 'sombre' by tower inferno, says Queen Elizabeth II

Members of the Fire Brigade who attended the scene of Grenfell Fire

Local residents have decried inadequate information and aid from council staff in the fire's aftermath, with hundreds of disgruntled demonstrators flocking to protest at Kensington town hall Saturday.

British Prime Minister Theresa May, praising the emergency and community reaction to the fatal incident, acknowledged on Saturday the response hadn't been "good enough" and vowed a full inquiry into the fire.

A total of 58 people who were in the Grenfell Tower on the night of the fire were missing and presumed to be dead, London police Commander said Saturday.

"The figure of 58 are those who are missing and that we have to presume are dead", said Cundy.

If that death toll is confirmed, it would make the Grenfell Tower blaze the deadliest in London since the Second World War.

"The figure of 30 that I gave yesterday is the number that I know, sadly, have, at least, died".

She also met victims of the fire in Downing Street.

She also pledged 5 million pounds ($6.39 million) of support, housing guarantees and help with access to bank accounts and cash.

Unveiling the plans for additional suuport Mrs May said: "The residents of Grenfell Tower, families who have lost loved ones, and the emergency services who have been working so hard to help them have been through some of the most harrowing and traumatic experiences imaginable".

First Secretary of State Damian Green has defended the prime minister, saying she was as "distraught as we all are". Khan added. "It's crucial as we get that as soon as possible".

Mrs May had earlier sidestepped questions over her response to the disaster, after facing criticism of her reaction to the tragedy. While failing to answer, she said the focus was now on providing support to the victims.

As the Grenfell residents and volunteers passed through the gates of Downing Street, protesters shouted angry chants about the Prime Minister and wore white ribbons as a sign of solidarity.

The tragedy cast a pall on the Trooping the Color festivities that mark the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.

"During recent visits in Manchester and London, I have been profoundly struck by the immediate inclination of people throughout the country to offer comfort and support to those in desperate need", the queen said in a statement.

"Put to the test, the United Kingdom has been resolute in the face of adversity", she added.

Such a direct message from the monarch is rare and indicates the extent of the turmoil in Britain.

She said she had ordered daily progress reports on housing for those affected, and vowed the public inquiry into the disaster would be "open and transparent".

Britain is now likely to go into arduous talks on Monday about its exit from the European Union with a weakened leader who is dependent on Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party to get legislation passed.

"In circumstances where foam plastic insulation is permitted, the insulation must meet stringent fire performance testing to limit the amount of smoke produced and slow the spread of flame, or the insulation must be protected by non-combustible material", Cripps said in an email.

"Wallowing in the wash of a general election that stripped our prime minister of her authority on the very eve of European Union negotiations, neither common sense nor the evidence suggest she can re-establish public confidence", Parris wrote in the Times.
