Brooks Koepka equals scoring record with US Open win

Koepka won what is considered the most hard major in epic fashion, shooting 16-under for what is tied for the lowest score vs. par at a U.S. Open ever.

He finished at 16-under for the tournament, tying the lowest 72-hole score relation to par in the tournament's history.

Koepka took it from there - a victory in Turkey against a strong field, his first PGA Tour victory in the Phoenix Open, his first Ryder Cup and now a major championship.

The San Diego native said his performance is proof that "my team and I are working on the right stuff, keeping my body on the right spot".

But Erin Hills, hosting its first major championship, finally played like a US Open course on Sunday, with 20-25 mile per hour winds wreaking havoc on the tee box and playing like the hard links-style course that the United States Golf Association envisioned when it booked the event. Capturing the U.S. Open may have just opened the floodgates for Koepka.

Brendan Steele, a PGA Tour victor but not much of a household name, became the first played in U.S. Open history to card 22 birdies in the week.

The 27-year-old struggled to believe his triumph, saying: "What I've done this week is unbelievable".

But the U.S. Open is meant to punish the world's best, where bogeys are good and pars are better - and you don't see the victor make three-straight birdies late Sunday to peel away from the field.

Matsuyama's 66 was the lowest round of the day, while England's Tommy Fleetwood (72) finished a shot back in fourth at 11-under. Koepka simply couldn't miss. "If I learned anything, you've got to put four good rounds together". "Obviously, Brooks dealt with it amazingly".

The wide open fairways and soft greens of Erin Hills created the ideal course for Koepka.

Only McIlroy and Tiger Woods had previously finished double digits under par in the game's toughest test, while no runner-up had ever managed such a total.

Yet the biggest prizes continue to elude the popular 28-year-old, who now boasts six top-five finishes in majors without a title to show for his efforts.

Some of the loudest cheers at the U.S. Open were reserved for a guy who never really challenged the leaders. After reaching 10 under through seven holes, he muffed two wedges and made triple bogey on his next hole.

The muscular American, who started the day one back of the lead, tamed his nerves and a wind-whipped course, carding six birdies, including two to kick-start his round, against a single bogey for a five-under 67.

Rickie Fowler said it was "fun" to play Erin Hills, which is an unusual descriptor for the U.S. Open.

But with the gusts gradually weakening over the course of the afternoon, Koepka and Harman picked up where they left on Saturday, seamlessly getting into the groove early on to jump ahead of the field. In any event, there was still plenty to talk about, so here's one final installment of birdies and (mostly) bogeys.

Matsuyama got off to a fast start with three birdies in his first five holes, including a 41-foot putt from just off the green on No. 4.

"To go over there, I think it helped me grow up a little bit and really figure out that, hey, play golf, get it done, and then you can really take this somewhere", he said.
