Brooks Koepka Wins a Surprising US Open

Brooks Koepka revelled in an "unbelievable" U.S. Open win after claiming his first major championship in style on Sunday.

What do you do when you've been in a serious vehicle accident as a child and your doctor advises you to avoid all contact sports?

He became the seventh consecutive first-time major victor but had no fears watching the leaderboard.

Koepka carded a closing 67 to finish 16 under par, matching the tournament scoring record set by Rory McIlroy at Congressional in 2011.

Erin Hills Golf Course will open to the public on July 1st. "I was trying to get it as low as I could". "We stuck with golf for a little while and it's panned out". I don't think anyone out here is.

The crash left him battered, bruised and looking like he'd done "six rounds with Muhammad Ali".

Fiftieth-ranked Brian Harman of the United States, who was the 54-hole leader, duelled with Koepka into the back nine before finishing 12-under, tied for second place with Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, ranked fourth in the world.

This makes two on the PGA Tour, and it was a big one.

Not many can boast a great uncle inducted into the college hall of fame for two sports, but then not many have taken such an unusual journey to the top. But at the same time, I don't feel as though I lost a golf tournament.

"I played behind and in front of him a few times and you could see how far and straight he hit it that it was going to be very tough for him not to be in contention every week on the Challenge Tour", recalled Stewart, who is now on the European Tour. I played well enough to do it yesterday but didn't quite have it today. "Not your typical U.S. Open setup", said McIlroy, "but I'm a big fan".

"It's pretty cool", Koepka said after clinching a $2.8 million winner's cheque and the famous US Open trophy. He also earned 600 FedEx Cup points.

"I have no idea why", he reflects. "And I built a lot of confidence off of that".

"Golf's my job, it's not my life".

"A bunch of people told me that and I felt like I really stayed patient all week. I think Brooks went out and won the tournament". It's something I do.

Erin Hills, with sheer bigness that requires less retrofitting for distance than older courses, and a brawn accented by humpy land and jagged bunkers that can make for exciting golf, offers a welcome but only occasional - maybe once every 20 years - change of pace from the traditional Golden Age classics.

Others in his place might have drifted away from the game. "You'd ride him, and he'd thank you for it". Much of the talk this year was how the scores were much lower compared to past U.S. Opens.

It has all led to this. - A local man is now the golf world's newest champion.

Among the moments we'll remember: Justin Thomas blistering a 3-wood into No. 18; Steve Stricker getting a standing ovation from his fellow cheeseheads; standing by the first tee Sunday afternoon as the wind hit the golden fescue just right, producing what looked like the wave. "I was always very confident, very in control of my game [and] in control of the way I was thinking". "I thought the USGA did a fantastic job coming back this year, and I know that they really wanted to".

"But it has been a great week and I finished fourth in the US Open, so I can't be too snooty about that".

He is also the seventh straight U.S. Open champion to be a first-time major victor.

Matsuyama got off to a fast start with three birdies in his first five holes, including a 41-foot putt from just off the green on No. 4.
