Brooks Koepka wins US Open at Erin Hills with record-equalling performance

Musings on the 117th US Open at Erin Hills following round two

No one was more solid from start to finish than Koepka.

Kite shot even-par 72 in gusty winds in 1992 at Pebble Beach, winning by two strokes over Jeff Sluman. The Englishman continues a tremendous 2017, with aspirations of glory at next month's Open Championship perfectly realistic.

For the first time since world rankings were introduced in 1986, the top three, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jason Day, all missed the cut at a major.

His five-under 67 was only bettered by Japan's Hideki Matsuyama who posted 66 to tie for second on 12 under with overnight leader Brian Harman (72).

Koepka's triumph had a foundation on the greens. He putted for birdie to move to 2 under for the day and 2 over for the tournament. By the time he took to the penultimate hole, he was 16 under par. Four golfers were tied for the lead, and nine were within four shots of the lead.

Koepka's win comes at a time when the Florida State golf program is riding high.

The statistics show that he won with a combination of power and accuracy from tee to green on the 7,845-yard course, the longest in major championship history. At that point he was 82nd.

Casey said he couldn't remember the last time he had five birdies in a row or an eight in a competitive round. Seven players already have reached 10 under or better this week - Koepka, Harman, Thomas, Fleetwood, Fowler, Charley Hoffman and Matsuyama.

Justin Thomas encountered the problems associated with backing up a record-breaking performance. Moreover, the 27-year-old doesn't find golf all that fascinating.

"So you had to play different shots and the wind is really blustery out there". The final-round average was 77.2, and 20 players shot in the 80s. But he only had one top 30 in his next four starts. "Everyone talks about Tiger Woods but my hero was Sergio", said Pepperell.

Champ and Scottie Scheffler are tied at 1 under.

The 20-year-old Scheffler, who plays for the University of Texas, finished at 1-under 287.

As Scheffler continues his career, confidence clearly won't be a problem.

"It hasn't sunk in, obviously, yet, and probably won't for a few days", said Koepka. It's one of those things, not a big fan of losing, I don't think anyone out here is.

Now in his fourth season on the PGA Tour, Koepka was frustrated with having won just one tournament - the 2015 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

Not even the wind could stop the onslaught of low scores at Erin Hills. "This wouldn't be my favourite US Open venue", he admitted.

"I played really solid from the moment we got here on Monday and all the way through until today", said Koepka.

The gusts tapered off from the morning, but they still were making Erin Hills play more hard than it had all week. "I know I'm going to be nervous, I just need to harness that as best I can". First, Westwood will set his sights on the Open in the more familiar surroundings of Royal Birkdale next month.

Of the 24 players on the course early, only two are under par for the day - William McGirt and Jordan Spieth. "And it was a very special week to be here", he said. "I think they did a fantastic job".

Last Sunday, Seminole standout Daniel Berger won the FedEx St. Jude Classic for the second straight year in Memphis. I'm glad I qualified and was able to play.

"Not trying to do anything to hold any kind of standard". So were the scores after a record-low Saturday.

"There was no unfairness whatsoever".

"I don't know if I have 14-under in my bag to play".

"It's tough going to two new venues in three years that they've never used before".

"It was bombs away; I loved it, " he said of the inviting fairways.
