Brooks Koepka wins US Open title after record week

One man who managed to keep his score down was Brooks Koepka, and it won him the U.S. Open.

ERIN, Wis. - Brooks Koepka received a short piece of advice from a valuable source on the eve of the final round at the U.S. Open.

"If you had told me I was going to shoot 12-under this year at the U.S. Open and not win, I would have taken that bet for sure, " Harman said.

Brooks Koepka walked up to the eighteenth tee on Sunday afternoon with a comfortable lead over his nearest challenger, Brian Harman. But the low scoring went much deeper than that.

By the time Matsuyama - six behind at the start of the final round - rolled in his eighth birdie of the day on the 18th, he was just one adrift of Koepka, who had five holes still to complete.

His 16-under par total ties the all-time U.S. Open record, set by Rory McIlroy in 2011.

The American fired a five-under 67 in the final round at Erin Hills to secure a four-stroke victory over Hideki Matsuyama and Brian Harman.

Harman's chances ended with two straight bogeys, and a bogey on the par-5 18th hole gave him a 72.

"It was a long phone call for us", Koepka said. He used the pivotal stretch to pull away and finish the championships at 16-under 272.

"It's definitely a special moment", Koepka said shortly after completing his final round of 5-under-par 67. The first couple of holes made a couple of bogeys and felt I rushed. "And I built a lot of confidence off of that".

He became both a 27-year-old U.S. Open champion and the latest of golf's enviably young headliners. Play the same, too.

"It's going to be a really cool day for someone tomorrow", the world number nine said. "He's been very unnoticed and maybe not respected as much as he should have for his record. And it's no surprise". And then 4, my ball was three inches from the hole, and it completely stopped and rolled back four and a half feet.

Except it was a different kind of Sunday. His round of 66 was over almost 90 minutes before Koepka strolled to the 18th green, with the tournament all but wrapped up.

"I learned a lot this week", he said.

Other than him, nobody made a charge.

Justin Thomas, the hero of the third round after a record-breaking nine-under-par 63, saw his challenge wilt with a three-over-par 75. Junior Amateur. On Sunday, he picked up his sixth top-10 finish and third top-3 finish since joining the PGA Tour in 2012.

Q. There were only two guys that shot a lower score in a U.S. Open than you ever.

That doesn't sound like the U.S. Open. But the fairways were generous and the wind that serves as the course's best defense didn't kick up until the end.

It all came together this week for the talented Koepka, who said he practiced patience and it paid off.

Asked about the low point, he said it came one night in Scotland when he called his agent and said he wanted to come home.

"The way I felt Saturday and Sunday, you never quite know how you will react and it was all new". "I just couldn't stand the fact that I'd only won once".

"I'd won once on the PGA Tour, once on the European Tour". Still, Koepka's low-key, understated style - mildly pumping his first after his birdies - may not offer the sizzle some in golf want in their next star.

Their scores - 13-under, 12-under, 11-under, and a trio of 10-under's - would have won every U.S. Open contested, save three.

He hit a good putt on No. 2 that got caught the left edge of the cup and spun out, and settled for bogey.
