Brooks Koepla Wins a Record-Setting US Open

Brooks Koepka of the United States poses with the winner's trophy with Jena Sims after his victory at the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills on June 18, 2017 in Hartford, Wisconsin.

Koepka's 16 under total tied Rory McIlroy's record (2011, Congressional) for lowest score in relation to par at a U.S. Open.

Koepka's final round included a 34-foot birdie putt on No. 8, a crucial 9-footer for par on No. 13, and a 17-foot birdie putt on No. 16 that iced his victory.

In the end, the 50-year-old Stricker marveled at the way the young, big hitters handled Erin Hills, which at around 7,800 yards was the longest course ever for a U.S. Open.

"Down the stretch Brooks was brilliant", said a sporting Fleetwood, who played alongside Koepka. "I didn't get my dad a card, so this works". That's what I did and it was great.

"I felt like that has been the thing lately with me, why I haven't really played that well, I've been trying to win so badly".

The turning point came when Koepka bagged three consecutive birdies, starting with the par-five 14th while Harman carded back-to-back bogeys on the hard 12th and 13th holes.

"It bites a little bit right now", the diminutive left-hander said after his first experience at being in contention at a major.

"After that, it was kind of lights out", Harman said.

Southport-born Tommy Fleetwood could not build on his 11-under par score from Saturday but still managed to secure fourth spot as he announced himself as an upcoming force within the golfing world.

Nonetheless, the birdie that started the string of three straight did wonders for Koepka's confidence. He opened with a pair of tap-in birdies and putted for birdie on every hole but the par-3 13th. The consensus from anyone that I've talked to is they really like the golf course.

The soft, forgiving conditions created opportunity for major movement up the leaderboard for those players willing to take it.

NOTEWORTHY: Koepka is the seventh straight first-time major victor.

The 30-year-old from Georgia had never gone past the second round in a US Open before this year, missing the cut on his two previous visits in 2012 and 2015.

Spieth had a nice day considering how the winds have picked up at Erin Hills. "He went and won the golf tournament on the back nine", Harman said. And then he made birdie on the next hole.

Koepka shot 3-under on the front nine to put him at 14-under for the weekend, which established him as the favorite for much of the final round. He duly missed to drop back to 13 under.

Another birdie chance lipped out on the 12th as the tension mounted.

Koepka then turned the screw with a nerveless trio of birdies to seize the crown.

Brooks Koepka and Brian Harman pulled clear of the field in the final round of the U.S. Open, but Rickie Fowler remained handily placed with a dramatic conclusion in prospect at a windy Erin Hills.

There were only six birdies and U.S. Open victor Brooks Koepka had one of them while Japan's Hideki Matsuyama carded one of the 18 bogeys resulting in a two stroke swing. "I would like to think that's not why I played how I did today".

"Next time I'll probably stay patient and think I will be better".

Cameron Champ, the only other amateur to make the cut, shot a 76 to finish at even par.
