Brroks Koepka wins US Open title

U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka revealed a phone call from Dustin Johnson helped him stay patient during the final round at Erin Hills.

"It's definitely a special moment", Koepka said shortly after completing his final round of 5-under-par 67.

If you get the sense that Harman is a bit hard on himself, and expects a good bit more than he has produced, well, this wasn't just him feeling a bit down after missing out at the U.S. Open.

Tommy Fleetwood, the 26-year-old Brit who was paired with victor Koepka, finished 11-under after shooting a final-round 72, said he learned immensely from his U.S. Open experience.

Defending champion Dustin Johnson was doing most of the talking. It was McIlroy who also shot 16-under-par in winning his U.S. Open title at Congressional Country Club outside Washington in 2011. Upon reflection, he added one more.

South Korea's Kim Si-Woo and Japan's Hideki Matsuyama were among five players on five under. Teeing off in the second to last group, Koepka birdied his first two holes to get to 13-under par and the big American would never trail again. Stricker tapped in for par. And once Koepka made his third straight birdie at 16, Harman knew his championship chase was over.

"To get to travel the world at 22, 21 years old, and do what you do for a living is pretty neat", Koepka said. "When that happened it did give me a lot of confidence".

"Obviously, that's just one shot, but that was a pretty big turn", Thomas said of the bogey on No. 4. "No regrets, but I did play well". Play the same, too.

"I feel really good about just about everything else", Spieth said. "He's been very unnoticed and maybe not respected as much as he should have for his record. And it's no surprise". Champ missed a long putt for birdie on the 18th hole that would have tied Scheffler. Out of a bunker at the 14th, a taking-dead-aim second at the 15th, and another straight over the flagstick at the 16th - three birdies in loud exclamation of his arrival among golf's elite.

Only Matsuyama displayed that kind of scoring ability Sunday. His round of 66 was over almost 90 minutes before Koepka strolled to the 18th green, with the tournament all but wrapped up.

"He watched me play".

"When I was a young junior golfer, I definitely perceived myself contending in majors".

Other than him, nobody made a charge.

Jamie Lovemark, Rickie Fowler and J.B. Holmes featured in a three-way tie at six under. Thomas began the final round one stroke back before carding a 75 that left him eight off the pace.

Erin Hills never quite shaped up as the exacting, U.S. Open-type course it could have been.

"It was fun to ... be able to score, because typically at a U.S. Open, you get your head beat in", American Rickie Fowler said. But the fairways were generous and the wind that serves as the course's best defense didn't kick up until the end. Yes, a guy could look at Koepka and see Palmer.

"Yeah, no doubt. I thought it was a fantastic round of golf, given what we were dealing with to start the day", the fifth-ranked player in the world said. "I didn't exactly get my dad a card, so this works". "Exhausted of traveling. I just wanted to be home", he said. (The 18th wasn't one of them.) All that from a guy only 27 years old, only in his fourth year out there, and yet he believed he had under-achieved because he'd won only once on the PGA Tour, once on the European Tour, and had done well in majors without winning.

Even though the 15-man leader board did not at any point Sunday contain a player who had won a major title, the field still had a mind-boggling seven who finished at 10 under par or lower.

It was an odd U.S. Open in this sense.

"That's probably the most emotion I've ever shown", Koepka said afterward.
