Buildings Across the Planet Turn Green for Paris Climate Deal

The Paris Agreement - agreed in December 3015 and entered into force in November a year later - aims to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change, in the context of sustainable development and efforts to eradicate poverty.

The Obama administration declared the deal "the most ambitious climate change agreement in history", and the US and China, two of the world's largest polluters, ratified the agreement last December.

Trump announced Thursday that his administration would immediately stop implementing the 195-nation accord brokered by Barack Obama in 2015 in tandem with Chinese leaders.

He said he would seek to negotiate a better deal for the United States, but was dismissive of the possibility that the United States might not get one.

Trump also faced a backlash at home where Democratic state governors, city mayors and powerful companies drew up plans to meet the pact's greenhouse gas emission targets.

Bloomberg, the former New York City mayor who Forbes estimates has amassed a $50 billion fortune, said on Twitter the world "can't wait for governments to act on climate change".

Expressions of shock and regret poured in from around the world, including from Pacific islands at risk of being swallowed by rising seas, who accused Washington of "abandoning" them. In a statement, Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune calls Trump's decision "one of the most ignorant and risky actions ever taken by any president".

On Thursday, Trump claimed the Paris Agreement placed "onerous energy restrictions" and a "draconian financial and economic burden" on the U.S.

"Trump's decision to ignore the vast majority of the American public and the scientific community will harm our country, costing us lives, jobs and our role as a world leader. And they won't be". McConnell adds, "By withdrawing from this unattainable mandate, President Trump has reiterated his commitment to protecting middle-class families across the country and workers throughout coal country from higher energy prices and potential job loss".

"There is nothing to renegotiate here", European Union climate commissioner Miguel Arias Canete told reporters in Brussels.

"In Paris, the world reached an unprecedented agreement to drastically lower carbon emissions and limit global warming to protect our planet".

Trump's decision is likely to play well with the Republican base, with the more immediate damage likely to appear on the diplomatic front.

Those companies expressed their disappointment after Trump announced his decision. However, environmentalists; energy stakeholders; USA and foreign officials; major corporations, including Apple, Google and Walmart; and even oil giants, such as BP and Shell, had urged Trump to stay in the agreement. Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk and Disney CEO Robert Iger both said they would give up their positions on the president's business advisory council because of his decision that even national security organizations have advised were important deterrents to global unrest.

Also on Friday, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - the global body for assessing the science related to climate change, which provides a scientific basis for governments at all levels to develop climate related policies - underscored that scientific evidence behind climate change is clear.
