Celtics Considered Primary Threat To Sign Blake Griffin Away From Clippers

The Boston Celtics have emerged as the primary threat to sign L.A. Clippers power forward Blake Griffin, as he is expected to opt out of the past year of his deal and become a free agent this offseason, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.

The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski, per Fansided's Ryan Snellings, said the Celtics are believed to have real interest in Griffin and Utah Jazz forward Gordon Hayward.

Getting Griffin to Boston would be huge and Wojnarowski says the team is planning on trying very hard to pry him away from the Clippers. Boston isn't in danger this offseason - they ARE the danger. With that in mind, both Griffin and the Los Angeles Clippers have interesting decisions to make this offseason, as the veteran hits the market as an unrestricted free agent. Now, they're not going to get both of them. Gordon Hayward is the better fit for the Celtics in my mind and could be the right move to help Boston contend for titles now and be set up to do so for years to come. "But they're both players who would potentially have interest there, and who Boston, I think, looks at in different ways with their future". And we all saw the way they sent off Paul (Pierce).

"Blake doesn't have enough left in his career to be beloved and be the all-time that Paul Pierce was, but it does give you a sense, and I know it did give Blake a sense". The Celtics have built a culture of high character players, and Griffin's attitude problems in the last few years would be a reason not to sign him. He's never quite lived up to that No. 1 overall pick status, but there is no denying that Griffin is an offensive force that would reshape the C's frontcourt.

The 28-year-old Oklahoma native has dealt with some injuries over the last couple of years, but when healthy, he's an All-NBA player. The Clippers can offer him a max contract of five years, $175 million while the Celtics or any other team could offer a four-year, $130 million deal.

Celtics players have already started the recruiting process.

National Basketball Association free agency gets underway on July 1 when players are able to verbally agree to a contract, which can be officially announced on July 6.
