Celtics to trade No. 1 Pick to 76ers

Celtics to trade No. 1 Pick to 76ers

That may not require relinquishing the No. 3 overall selection in the 2017 NBA Draft, but it could require the Celtics to deal several future first-round picks as well as several second-round selections for this year.

Guard Markelle Fultz is expected to be the No. 1 pick but he will not be heading to the Celtics. Reports from Woj and ESPN indicate that Lakers pick will have some interesting protections on it: if the lottery ultimately places it in picks two through five it will not convey to the Celtics, but will instead stay with the Sixers, and the Celtics will instead receive the 2019 pick of the Sacramento Kings, also now owned by the Sixers.

Before Friday, the consensus was that Fultz was bound for the Celtics, who have the first overall pick.

As the trade is expected to happen on Monday, Magic Johnson and the Los Angeles Lakers can still mess everything up if they really relish Fultz over Lonzo Ball and offer the Celtics a sweeter deal.

Donning a 76ers cap as he arrived at the team's practice facility, Fultz said he's trying not to pay much attention to the trade talk. Rival Boston declines to add the player considered the premier talent in the draft (with many pundits ranking Fultz far ahead of the rest of the class) and commits to Thomas, who is defensively challenged, which can hamstring the Celtics in the playoffs.

That still gives Ainge a 2018 high pick and their own 2018 first-round pick to play with. Probably not a surprise when you sleep through a almost three-hour drive from his Upper Marlboro, Md. home to the court, then jog right out and start hoisting the basketball.

"Embiid, he and I have been talking before when I was in college", Fultz said.

The NBA Draft is still a few days away, but the wheeling and dealing has already begun. To this point, however, there haven't been any credible rumors surrounding what Minnesota might get in return in any trade surrounding the draft pick, so Wolves fans simply don't know what they could expect. Regardless, since many consider Fultz as this year's 1st overall pick, the Lakers can't take him at No. 2. When I saw that I thought it was pretty cool, pretty amusing.

"I just wake up and go where they tell me to go", Fultz said.

In his only season with Washington, the 6-foot-5, 186-pound Fultz averaged 23.2 points and 5.9 assists. Fultz led the Pac-12 in scoring and finished No. 6 among all Division I players, and was the top freshman scorer in the country. They'll have an outside chance at it - at best at 44 percent chance if both they and the Lakers finish with the two worst records in basketball next year, but more likely a 10-20 percent chance at No. 1 in 2018.

The same questions about fit will now surround Philadelphia's backcourt, although Ben Simmons - who missed his entire rookie season past year while recovering from a foot injury - can be more of a traditional point guard than Thomas, and won't require the ball in his hands as much. Embiid and Saric were drafted during his time as GM, while years of tanking for the highest lottery odds resulted in Philadelphia finally landing the No. 1 overall pick last year and selecting Simmons.

Last season's improved win total came with Okafor (50), Embiid (31) and Simmons (0) combining for 81 appearances, as Philadelphia's trend of being absolutely snakebit by injuries continued. "He's a cool guy". "And I'm happy that the players want me to come here".
